Chapter 3: Yavin

Corbin Jarrek was scared. He desperately clamped down on his fear but mental clarity was elusive at the moment, it appeared, no matter what he did. The red man in primitive hide clothing beside him through the Jungle…was a Sith. Something he had believed would never be a concern during his lifetime.

"Why didn't you just leave me to Exar Kun…wouldn't it have been in your best interest?"

"No"

"But you're a Sith….so was he."

"What do you know of the Sith. Not as your enemy, as a culture and society that exited?"

"They were brutal. They used the force in a corrupted way. They were slaves to their rage."

"The story of the Sith is a long one…but it begins with a species with a genetic connection to the dark side, as I said. The Massassi, my sub race, we're the warrior cast of the Sith. We began on Korriban in a time long ago…but there was no Sith order until Ajunta Pall…a human. The Sith warrior culture was adapted to a code.

"Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. This code killed the Sith."

"So you agree your race was barbaric."

"I agree my culture was taken by a human, my race subjugated, and my values were turned into a short-sighted philosophy that, while great in theory, led to the infighting and prejudice that lead to our extinction."

"You are biased against humans?"

"I am angered that my culture was placed on a path of destruction by the actions of one human Jedi."

"You must agree that a race of the dark side would destroy itself."

"Then it would have been our fate. But it would be a fate we chose. Frankly I disagree though, our race managed to make it pretty damn far for 'barbaric darksiders.'"

"You know…I could bring you before the council…if you are already trained in the forc-"

"No. I am not a Dark lord. I am not an acolyte. But I am a Sith and your order was a major contributor to my races destruction."

"How so?"

"How do you think the Sith order started?"

It took a minute for Corbin to come up with a good answer.

"The corruption of the dark side."

"I mean where do you think the Sith got their skilled leaders?"

"…what do you mean?"

"Ajunta pall. Xendor. Exar Kun. Revan…these were all Jedi once in their lives."

"They were weak."

"Were they? Would you say that if lord Revan stepped before you right now?"

"I…they fell. They were evil."

"Were they? Do you know how to access the dark side?"

"Hatred"

"Passion. Hatred is the easiest form of it but truly it's passion."

"Is there difference?"

"Sith drew their power from love in a sense. They loved to Hate. But the dark side relies on having something to be passionate about."

"The reason the Jedi forbid attachments."

"The reason your order will die like my species."

"What!?"

"Dark Jedi always fell for one of two things, knowledge or love. They largely fell for their own faults…but the Jedi do not help. Resentment is an amazing way to breed the dark side."

"How would you know?"

"Because the ultimate failure of the Sith Empire was rooted in the fact that Hatred had to be artificially created by resentment. It might have killed the empire but it was damn effective at making powerful darksiders."

"I'm done with this debate."

"Okay ki-ignite your blade."

"What?"

Then he felt it. The nudge of the force on the back of his mind, warning him of coming danger. Then the roar came, a gargantuan beast screaming as it ran through the brush towards them. It ran shifting between two legs and all fours, a rancor.

Corbin ignited his blade, it's crimson glow sheening against the green plants around them. Behind him his men screamed and yelled in fear, starting to fire towards the beast.

The Sith…Kai, waisted no time, leaping towards the thing. He had no weapon but seemed to know what to do.

"Legs! Go for the legs!"

Thinking fast, Corbin dashed forward and rolled under the rancor's arm on its left side as it swung towards Kai on its right. Corbin jabbed his blade into its knee and leaped forward, but he wasn't fast enough, and the beast slammed him into the ground before he could leap away. Corbin felt his ribs shatter as he was forced into the jungle floor. The last thing he felt before his world went dark was his left lung giving out.

——-

"Shit."

Kai ducked under the swinging arms of the beast desperately trying to end his life. He summoned the lightsaber from the Jedi's hand, getting used to the grip as he danced around the beast. When he was comfortable, he stopped moving and waited for an arm to swing over him. The beast went to backhand him with the same arm, so he leaped over it, slicing through the beast's wrist. He landed and watched as the beast stumbled backwards, clutching its wrist.

Summoning power, he gripped at a tree next to the rancor. Taking a deep breath, he reached out, and clutched. Cracks ran up the tree to its tip, branching out and marring its surface. He then pulled his arm back and punched down, the tree following his actions and collapsing on the now very dead rancor.

When Kai was satisfied, he looked at the Jedi. The kid was nearly dead and would die very soon if he didn't get serious medical attention.

Kai lifted the kid with the force and walked towards the temple.
