Chapter 135: Chapter 135: The mass grave causes psychosis

There was a huge crash that rang across the Fifth Floor of Nazarick.

"Hrrrgh!" Nyx growled in annoyed fury as she crashed through an already-weakened wall of the haunted, frozen house into which she had been repeatedly teleported. "Sheesh… Just die, you annoying flies!"

"YOUUuu-!" A wailing howl came from the wretch that Nyx had on her other hand, as she had grabbed the black-clad insane-looking woman by her skinless face while the wretch was trying to stab through Nyx's dress with a pair of oversized scissors.

Nyx grew tired of her, so she tossed the skinned-looking woman back at the haunted manor, causing her to let a sickening crash as she impacted against the broken beams of wood and wrought iron, followed by a spurt of blood as the sharp masonry penetrated the black-clad woman's back and came through her stomach.

"M-my children…" The woman seemed quite shocked for a moment as she stared down… Only for a rain of dart-like shards of darkness to silence her and cause her shredded body to slump against the freezing, broken masonry in a puddle of gore and shredded flesh.

'...Beelzebub said that this is 'Hastur's treasury. That being said, it's weird how weak those inside the treasury are… Or this is a trap.' Nyx flicked her hair in dismissal after finishing off the annoying fly- The fact the black-clad insane woman had been too busy wailing and trying to snip at Nyx with her scissors to properly feel pain and torment had made her unattractive for Nyx to torment in length.

She looked around the place that looked to be experiencing a particularly strong blizzard… And sneezed a bit. 'Ehh… Where exactly is this supposed to be, then? Norway? Well, I heard that the Norse Mythology got whacked when they tried to intercept some meeting between the Three Factions… Ah, it must have had something to do with Hastur, considering Beelzebub is involved. In other words, did Hastur move a bunch of Norse things here? I can't recall that woman from that mythology, she was more akin to that one Japanese myth… '

Nyx sighed and shrugged while hugging herself… And then turned to set the frozen manor on fire with a flick of her hand so that she could warm her hands on it. 'Ah, that's better. Hm, I really don't like the cold…'

There was a flicker of movement somewhere nearby… And Nyx dodged as a gleaming blade came out of the blizzard and attempted to slice her head off.

The blow missed, albeit not without tussling Nyx's hairs from the shockwave left by the blade, and Nyx counter-attacked by simply reaching out with her darkness and dragging the attacker closer to her.

The shadow cast a silhouette in the blizzard, before Nyx was facing a nearly ten-feet tall insectoid creature with four blades, one in each of his four arms.

'Hm… Pfft.' Nyxt smirked to herself as the creature advanced on her in a flurry of blows, many of which she didn't manage to dodge as the insectoid warrior's blows were simply too swift and numerous to avoid completely… Only, none of the blows did any damage to Nyx.

'Amusing.' Nyx backstepped a bit and sat on a wooden beam that was poking out of the burning manor. "So, what exactly are you?"

The insect warrior seemed to realize that his blows failed to do anything to Nyx, and merely clicked his giant mandibles while taking a 'guard' stance. "I. am. the. Guardian. of. the. Fifth. Floor. Cocytus."

"And do you know that you won't be able to win against me, no matter what you do?" Nyx smirked a bit as the warrior had clearly turned from furious assault to slow circling, waiting for an opportunity that would never come.

After all, Nyx had a magic item specifically crafted for her, albeit she had thought it as a joke when she had received it from the Gods of Hell as a tribute. However, the more she used the item, the more she began to appreciate the amount of despair she could inflict upon the 'holier than thou' types of master warriors using the item.

Simply put, the dress Nyx wore made her invulnerable to attacks made against her by virgins- The [Virgin-Killer Dress].

"I. am. aware. However. that. won't. stop. me. from. completing. my. duties." The insectoid warrior was clearly unaffected by Nyx's banter.

"Oh, I love you stoic and dutiful types. You all break at the end, and then you rage and beg so sweetly." Nyx's smirk widened a bit. "Now then, failure of a warrior, brace yourself."

"Before. we. fight, I. wish. to. ask. you. a. question."

"Hoo? Well, go ahead."

"Why. are. you. doing. this?" Cocytus's pose sharpened like a bow being drawn, ready to release to commit violence.

"Because I love tormenting up-front and honest people like you~"

"I. see. I. suppose. that. is. not. a. unusual. desire. to. have. Many. of. my. comrades. share. that. desire. However. you. have. committed. crimes. against. the. Supreme. Being, and. now. you. shall. die."

Nyx lifted her eyebrow at the insect's speech, but nonetheless stayed still as Cocytus charged and began to slash at Nyx… Only to swap weapons mid-swing to a pair of hammers, which slammed against Nyx's chest.

"Oh my." Nyx's eyebrow twitched as her breasts bounced around wildly from the impact. "It's polite to ask for a girl's consent before doing that, you know. Perverts like you… Should be punished!"

Cocytus tried to dodge, but the shadow Nyx had been extending around her under the snow rose up as a row of spike-like teeth that caught Cocytus by one of his hands, slicing through the insect's palm.

The spike was cut off in an instant, though, and Cocytus brought out a spear to replace the hammer that he had dropped.

"One~cut." Nyx sing-songed. "Prepare yourself for a thousand more, Cocytus-kun."

"I. will. endure. a. million. cuts. for. the. Supreme. Being."

"Then I will make it a million and one~"

A flap of wings filled the air above Japan as a swarm of Evil Dragons fell upon the still-recoiling island nation.

Kyoto had blown up in a massive explosion.

Kuoh had been wiped off the map.

A massive dragon had crashed into Tokyo… Not to mention the massive tsunamis, earthquakes and natural disasters that had struck the shoreline after the natural order of things was altered.

To put it in short, Japan was not having a good time.

Yet, there were still some people entering the island-nation, albeit not through 'normal' means.

A cloaked figure moved through the evacuee camps into which the people of Kuoh had been evacuated after a 'mysterious gas line explosion' had ruined the city's water and power infrastructure, forcing the city to evacuate it's people for the duration of the repairs… Repairs that would not be completed, seeing that the city had turned to ruins soon after the gas explosions.

The evacuee camp that was some hundred miles away from the ruins of the city still bustled with activity, albeit the faces of the people within the camp were quite fatalistic outside some congregations that were gathered around a group of doom-sayers, demagogues, and seemingly some cultists clad in violet and black.

The cloaked figure didn't pay much attention to any of them as she moved through the camp… At least, until a pair of men collided onto the figure, causing it to drop something.

"Ah, sorry, sorry… Ho? Hey, sorry about bumping into you. Listen, we'd like to apologize by offering you a free drink at our campsite- We've got some booze stashed away." The pair of men had gotten a glance under the mysterious figure's hood during the collision. "Top shelf stuff, you know. Hard to come by in this economy."

The hooded figure had knelt down on both knees and grabbed whatever it had dropped, and was cradling the item dearly against its chest as if the item was a holy relic or family treasure.

"What'd you got there? Hey, things are tough and we need to all stick together, we can't afford to hoard stuff that we can share. Is it valuable?" The pair of me took a step towards the cloaked figure… Who looked up at the pair with eyes full of infernal hatred and insanity.

The pair of men stopped… and shook their heads, feeling oddly sleepy all of a sudden. "Hey… I don't care about that bauble… It's probably not worth anything in the first place… But the girl's smoking… Hey, missus, we have a cozy bed… So you'll come with us… and we'll… huooo…"

The pair collapsed to their knees and toppled over in deep, nightmare-wracked and unnaturally deep sleep.

The cloaked figure drew her hood better over her head, stood up and continued her walk.

Le Fay Pendragon cradled her pendant, her last memento of her brother who had died in London during the attack of the ancient evil, evil upon which Le Fay had glanced in her foolishness.

Her life had no meaning. She had no meaning anymore.

She could only do one thing- Try to make one thing right.

To kill the monstrosity that she had provoked, before it could destroy everything…

Or, more likely, she'd die attempting to do that. But she was alright with that- her life had lost its meaning already, she was a dead mage walking.

Le Fay looked in the direction of Kuoh, which seemed to project an eerie, ominous aura to her senses even a hundred miles or so away.

She knew she'd meet her fate there. A cruel, wicked and horrifying fate.

And so she took a step towards it.

Albion entered a transportation tunnel between realms through his portal, aimed at the Human World.

'...What is God's plan in letting me flee with Albion's body?' Albion thought as he moved through the portal which seemed like moving through a tunnel of passing stars, lined with the kaleidoscopic colors of the Interdimensional Gap, with Vali's body in his claws. 'I figured he'd stab me in the back when I tried to make a run for it… He's changed somewhat, but sheesh… This is really eerie…'

Albion was fairly sure that God wouldn't resurrect Vali, but would instead use him for his research on devils- With Angels and Fallen having merged into one species, it was a no brainer for Albion to figure out that God was likely trying to merge Devils and Angels next. 'Vali was of original Lucifer's bloodline, so he would have been a good subject for God… I wonder if that's why he sent Kuroka to kill him? It was pretty much picture perfect assassination, making Vali lower his guard around a distressed ally, the distract him with another not-really-ally, during which he was ambushed by his original ally… Devious. It's clear that God's taken a page or twelve from the Devil's playbook… Could it be that he has already merged himself as an amalgamation of a devil and an angel, and is seeking to do the same for the rest of the Three Factions, turning it into One Faction?'

The whole issue of Three Factions didn't really matter to Albion on personal level, but he was forced to at least keep an eye on it, considering that Ddraig was used by God under the threat that He'd go and snatch parts of Albion to feed to Ddraig if the red dragon didn't play ball.

The threat was thus aimed at both dragons, and Albion wondered just what was God's plan with it- Was he trying to have both of the dragons team up for the first time in ever to take down God… Or had his power grown in the meanwhile to such ridiculous levels that he felt confident in making such an ultimatum?

However, Albion's thoughts came to a halt as he stopped moving in the transportation tunnel.

He looked behind himself… And saw a massive draconic claw tied around his tail, and that the claw had broken through the tunnel's 'wall'.

"Eh?" Albion blinked before the claw dragged him out of the teleportation tunnel, and he realized that he had ended up in the kaleidoscopic void of Interdimensional Gap.

The next thing he realized that he had been whacked against something reallycreepy as if he was a dragon-sized club.

Albion saw what he had been whacked against, and screamed in terror.

The razor-sharp claw-tipped tentacled, sickeningly yellow and horrifying 'creature' that seemed to both have a body yet appear ethereal and unseen at the same time screamed in terror as well.

Ophis's insane roar echoed in the realm that knew no space.

.

.

Momonga poked Ddraig inside his head.

"It's alright, I'm just getting chills down my spine for some reason. Don't worry."

'You know the next time you start screaming in terror inside my head, please give me a heads-up. I thought I'd jump out of my skin, that was really creepy.'

"Okay, then please give me a heads-up the next time you plan on feeding a chunk of Albion to me."

'Fine, sure, if that makes you feel at ease….' Momonga sighed and moved on.

He had decided to give Kuroka some time to figure out a way to deal with Koneko's 'issue', and instead moved on to the quarters he'd given to Venelana Gremory as well as Grayfia and her son- or rather, a prison masked as a comfortable wing in the castle-manor complete with garden and all, as he had been quite specific in requesting the Gremory 'family' to stay in it. 'I should probably check up on the Gremory's. Grayfia's a bit of a wildcard but she doesn't really have anywhere to go, and I have remote-mined her son so if she tries to make a run for it, then Millicas is going to lose his head. She probably suspects that to be the case as well, but I didn't want to state that outright in case she goes extra-hostile- Rias's interference on the two should help convert them eventually to my side, but there's no way that's going to be an easy process.'

"Well, you did blow up their husbands."

'I would have brought Zeoticus back as soon as I got my hands on his remains, but it seems that Beelzebub blew them up… I tried to cast a resurrection spell on thin air while thinking about Zeoticus but nothing happened, so I'm pretty sure the spell needs at least a speck of the original person in order to work.' Momonga noted to Ddraig while walking away from the crushed section of the castle-manor, leaving the Cherubim Gatekeepers to take care of the mess left by Albion. 'Sirzechs… Well, you understand why I can't do the same for him.'

"Not only do I understand, I approve. I disliked the Maous as much as the next dragon- Even though Sirzechs-kun paid lip service to us dragons, it was Tannin and Tannin's strength alone that guaranteed a modicum of safety to fruit-dependant dragons in the Underworld…" Ddraig seemed to sigh quite hard. "Speaking of which… If by any chance you feel like getting the gratitude of a lot of dragons…"

'...Find a way to restore the Dragonfruit farm and start distributing them for a modest but gradually growing fee until the dragons of Underworld are subservient to me?'

"Erk, more like distribute them for free and get so much goodwill that the dragons will choose to ride to your aid as a savior of their kind." Ddraig gave Momonga a wary look. "You know, if you start fleecing the fruit-dependent dragons, the vast majority of them will attempt to overthrow you, as suicidical as that is- Between death and slavery, most dragons will chose death. And for the record, I consider our relationship… indentured servitude, let's put it like that. And even though you'll kill them all, they're going to do a lot of damage on their way out- Even the Maous were not stupid enough to try to subvert them overtly through vital economics, they're not blind to price gouging when it comes to food."

'Hm. I'll keep that in mind.' Momonga nodded- While it pained him to miss a hefty profit on guaranteed sales, he was not foolish enough to not consider Ddraig's words as he recognized that the red dragon would be the expert on Dragons, even if he was an impartial source of information. 'Well, assuming I'll be able to restore the fruit supply anyway… I'll send a couple of Michael's angels to see if there's anything they can do, they can probably figure out something… Or Yasaka's people, since I recall that the Japanese demons were quite nature-oriented.'

Momonga walked towards the Gremory wing while sending a [Message] to Yasaka, asking her about the dilemma of the Dragonfruit… But the message failed to connect. 'Huh, that's odd. I wonder if she has some sort of mental defense that stops [Message]'s? Well, I'll just have to bring that issue up with her the next I see her… We need to figure out the area transfer as well as put the common rules for coexistence to paper anyway, so I can bring the fruit issue up to her then…'

"Could it be that she's in trouble?"

'Well, I'm sure the Youkai will come to ask me for help if that's the case. I can then use that to curry favor from her faction… Or use it to bind Yasaka closer to me under the pretense of riding to the aid of my wife, as technically she and I are married, kinda.'

"Sure…"

Momonga stopped in front of the double-door that led to the Gremory Wing, and knocked on it.

Only, instead of letting a polite 'knock', the wooden door shattered as if it was ice, and revealed a frost-covered room…

.

.

Ten Minutes Earlier:

"H-ha… sniff… haha…" Venelana was crying while sitting on a couch beside Rias, who was hugging her mother while crying as well. However, while Rias was quiet in her sorrow, Venelana couldn't hold insane giggles back.

'It's my fault. This is all my fault. Caitlin told everything to me. I should have… I should have insisted that I'd stay when He was about to take me and Caitilin while looking like a pre-teen boy, in that room, but I fled… Like Caitlin did, when she had attempted to circumvent her 'deal' with the Supreme Being by fleeing him at every opportunity and clinging to her husband… Caitlin told me, there was no hope…'

"Mom… About dad, about Sirzechs-nii…" Rias blew her nose to a white cloth and rested her head on Venelana's lap, allowing Venelana to stroke her head like she had when Rias had been just a child.

"It's alright. Mom will make everything alright. I know just what to do." Venelana's mouth spoke words while her mind threatened to twist itself into a stranglehold around itself and tear it apart from seams from the sorrow and despair. "Momon-sama can bring dad back. And Sirzechs-san back. There's just… a condition for it. I… didn't agree to the condition when He told me it first, indirectly, but… I… I can still make things right, I hope…"

"Mom?" Rias asked, while Grayfia seemed to snap from her stupor as she had been sitting on a couch opposite to Rias's and Venelana's, while Millicas was sitting next to Grayfia and had been huddled into a ball on the couch with his head against his knees. "Venelana-sama? What are you saying?"

It looked like Grayfia was taking the news of Sirzechs's 'non-resurrection' better than Millicas, even though the woman's cold approach to the news was likely only surface-level.

Or, now that Venelana thought of it, Grayfia had been present with the Supreme Being ever since the fateful meeting of the Three Factions, and now that Venelana was thinking about the oddness of Grayfia's actions as well how coldly she took the news that Sirzechs 'couldn't' be resurrected… She realized that the coincidental timing of the Supreme Being coming to 'save' Millicas and Venelana from Beelzebub in their grounds in the Underworld was unlikely to be a coincidence. 'W-wait, doesn't that mean… T-that… Grayfia- She- She betrayed Sirzechs out of her free will, sacrificing him for the safety of herself and her son?!'

The thought would have been utterly unthinkable for Venelana had she been in a better condition mentally, or if the situation hadn't gone as badly as it had… But as soon as Venelana was starting to realize the dots, she realized that they made a quite convenient line leading ultimately to Grayfia being a spy for the Supreme Being-

And now that Venelana thought about it, Rias had told her that Grayfia had come to fetch Rias from 'Issei Hyoudou's bedroom, back when Momon had been known as Issei Hyoudou… But Venelana realized that while the names and personalities were different, that didn't necessarily mean that the person 'underneath' the persona was different. 'In other words… T-that means… when Grayfia interrupted Issei and Rias from having sex in the Human World before meeting Riser for the pre-arranged meeting between them in preparation for arranged marriage, d-don't tell me… That was when he struck, sinking his claws to Grayfia for her insolence while wiping the event from Rias's mind? Devils and Angels can manipulate the minds of humans, but not of those of their kind… But Momon is a being of far higher level existence, to him we might as well be humans in terms of our power…'

However… 'There's a chance that He didn't even need to forcibly manipulate Grayfia… She is, after all, Lucifuge… The blood of a house of traitors. I… I thought, I thought she was different, that she was of higher moral caliber, when she joined us, but… I should have known. I should have realized. She betrayed her old masters, joined us, our side, before the war was concluded but back then she must have seen how it'd go… Of course she'd join the winning camp, and just like back then, she must have instantly realized Momon was going to win when he confronted her, and… and…'

Venelana hadn't even noticed that she had stood up.

Nor that she had taken a step towards Grayfia, or another, or another until she was in front of the calm if cold-looking woman who seemed to hide her grief- Or lack thereof.

"You… I see now. You were with Him the whole time- Daughter of Lucifuge" Venelana's voice came out as a vengeful, hateful hiss that condensed the soul-crushing grief she felt into words, and Grayfia recoiled as if struck… Or as if her true, traitorous allegiances were brought to light.

It was confirmation enough for Venelana's vengeful, scared and enraged mind.

She saw red.

"Venelana-obaasan!" A faint cry came from somewhere, as well as "Mother! No!" from somewhere behind her, but Venelana only barely heard either voices.

She had enough. Her son was dead. Her husband was dead.

And the emotionless accomplice of the terrifying orchestrator of their deaths was in front of her.

Venelana knew she couldn't save either of them, anymore, not after what she was about to do.

Her Bael blood boiled with anger and rage, and made her lose her reason- All the while a tiny part of her realized that it might have too been a part of the Supreme Being's plan, to forsake a traitor to her death and damn Venelana to eternal servitude at the same time.

After all, just as Grayfia had forsaken her old masters for Sirzechs, and Sirzechs for the Supreme Being, Grayfia was just as likely to forsake the Supreme Being for anyone who seemed to be winning against him. Therefore, it made sense for Him to get rid of Grayfia as soon as her usefulness came to an end.

A part of Venelana's mind screamed at her, telling her that she was playing exactly to the Supreme Being's tune by crashing on top of Grayfia and tying both of her hands around the traitor's throat while [Power of Destruction] crackled and swirled around her in a maelstrom that forced everyone around her to retreat or be destroyed.

Grayfia's eyes were shocked for a moment as she tried to pry Venelana's hands off from her throat… Before she seemingly accepted her fate and stopped resisting, closing her eyes and waiting for her death. "I understand- hhhhng- Please take care of Millicas… I'm sorry… I… failed… Sirzechs… I… deserve… this…"

The peaceful look on the gray-haired woman's face enraged Venelana to no end, even as the maid's breath failed her as Venenelana's hands were around her throat, and the gray-haired woman's voice came out as a whine.

"You dare… You dare speak of me taking care of your spawn when you conspired to have my son and my husband killed?! My Sirzechs! My Zeoticus!" Venelana screamed in despair and anger while her grip on Grayfia's throat became steel-hard, even as she felt two pairs of hands trying to tug her away after struggling past the crackling of [Power of Destruction] that wrought havoc all over the room. "You- You worked with Him! You betrayed Sirzechs! You betrayed the Underworld! Everyone! Die! Suffer and die!"

Grayfia looked like she wanted to say something and her eyes opened wide in shock, but Venelana crashed the gray-haired maid to the floor and began banging her head against the floor in abject fury. Blood started to come from around Grayfia's throat as Venelana's fingernails burrowed themselves through the woman's skin.

The room flash-froze as Grayfia struggled weakly, causing the flowers within to wilt while the furniture grew rime, but Venelana's flames of rage burned brighter than any frost and allowed to ignore the cold, while [Power of Destruction] rend at Grayfia's body, causing her to spasm in torment under Venelana as she had straddled onto the maid's stomach to force her down.

"Mom! Stop! What are you doing-!"

"Obaasan! Please! Why- Okaasan! Please don't die! Help! Someone- anyone!"

"Hm… [Hold Species]."

Venelana toppled over like a mannequin.

"Greetings." A familiar voice came from somewhere behind her, causing Venelana's heart to skip a beat and her face to start feeling cold, as if her whole body contorted in terror without being able to do so.

"Ah- Momon! Please help! Something's gotten into mom, and she-"

"Grayfia-okaasan! Please wake up!"

"Hm… I see."

Venelana felt as she was turned around while she was still in a choking position, her hands held up in the air.

And then she saw Momon leaning over her while he looked a bit disappointed, causing Velenelana's heart to stop completely for a few seconds from sheer terror. "I think we should talk."

The full-paralyzation wore off…

And then Venelana's body contorted into a fetal position while she screamed in abject horror, as the feelings and realizations boiled over and caused her body and mind to break down.

.

.

'...Ddraig?'

"Yeah?"

'Can you take over and I'll just sit down in a corner to have a small break.'

"...Not really… "

'...Right.'

Momonga drew her eyes away from Venelana who was in a fetal position and was screaming in terror on the floor, glanced at Grayfia who took laboured breaths while her clothes smoked and she was massaging her throat, then glanced at Millicas who seemed to be in panic as he knelt beside Grayfia, and finally looked at Rias.

"...Does your mother do that often?" Momonga asked with a flat tone.

Rias stared at Momonga… And then began to giggle while her eyes turned flat and lifeless.

'...Don't tell me that it runs in the family?' Momonga sweated as Rias seemed to lose it and began to laugh hysterically.

"Don't look at me mate, you're the one who married into a family of redheads." Ddraig supplied helpfully.

Momonga sighed for what he felt was the thousandth time that day alone.
