She looked at him intently with her bright eyes. He stood straight, so handsome in his elegant clothes.
"Adela!" Philip expressed his admiration, "It is you! That flame in your eyes, I would recognize it among thousands of eyes," he told her, unable to take his eyes off hers. He had utterly surrendered to her gaze.
Virginia discreetly left the living room, leaving them alone. When Virginia saw Adela at the end of the stairs coming wearing one of her old ugly dresses, her mouth dropped open at her sight, overwhelmed by the feeling of despair, and she swallowed a gasp. But then she remembered and realized that Adela couldn't do otherwise.
She felt guilty because she had forgotten and blamed herself.
She urgently needed to visit Heather, the seamstress, to find out what was happening with the girls' dresses. She noted it mentally in her mind and decided she would pay her a morning visit tomorrow.
