"Once there was a beauty, unforgettable at first glance (1)."
Yan Zheyun dimpled at Hua Zhixuan's exaggerated recital of this renowned love poem titled 'Feng Courting Huang'. Fenghuang together also formed the characters for phoenix. The title of this poem was also a famous guqin piece, the very one he'd chosen to perform for Liu Yao at the Spring Festival family banquet months ago. That had been the first night Liu Yao had flipped his tablet and even now, Yan Zheyun could remember the way his heart hadn't known whether to soar or sink, racing with trepidation and excitement.
(1) Once there was a beauty, unforgettable at first glance: Written by Sima Xiangru, a poet and politician who lived during the Two Han Dynasties (179-118BC) during his pursuit of his lover. The pair had fallen in love with each other at first sight during a banquet at her family’s house (he was a famous scholar at that time and she was known to be a beautiful widow) and they eloped soon after.
(2) Weiyang Square: The large quadrangle leading up to Weiyang Hall. I couldn’t find any records on what the historical name for the square truly was called so I used the naming tradition of the Qing Dynasty’s Forbidden City and named it after the main hall it precedes.
(3) Changle Gate: As far as I know, this gate name does not exist in history. I named it after another Tang Dynasty palace to match ‘Weiyang’. Changle means eternal happiness and Weiyang means endless.
(4) Suona: A traditional double-reeded musical instrument used in a lot of ritual music, including weddings and funerals. I was unable to find out whether it was truly used in court music for ceremonies but I didn’t delve deeply into my research on this area.
(5) Urgent news from eight hundred li: News carried from the distant frontiers. Eight hundred li is approximately 400km. Only bearers of such information were allowed to enter the imperial city without first disembarking from their horses and reporting their purposes.
A/N: Thank you very much for reading! <3 And thank you also for the lovely gifts, comments, golden tickets, and power stones! <3
