The sound of the impact of what landed was so loud that it resonated for miles, like thunder, and powerful enough to cause earthquakes that were felt beyond the plains. 

Amidst the dust raised by the impact, Meredith jumped back, obeying Luke's order for them to disperse.

However, Wanney couldn't move even a muscle, not from fear or surprise, but because he already thought he was dead as soon as he heard the sound that cut through the clouds. Since Luke couldn't let this man die yet because of the valuable information he could offer him, Luke grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled him backwards.

As soon as the dust rose, it too was spread by a flapping of wings.
