Chapter 63: The Blade Of Vernaheim

___________

POV: Fillia

___________

Location: Elden Forest Mansion

The scarlet sun had begun to set. Its warm glow which had thawed the mountainsides and lit the grand green forests now dipped below the horizon. Up in the sky, the shadow of the three moons hung in the sky, pale imitations of the once burning sun. They emanated a pale cold light as the creatures of the forest returned to their hollows and caves in the hopes that their fear of the creatures of the night would disappear with their consciousness.

However, in the throes of the sun's final glow, two people stood. One, a dark skinned woman wielding a long silver hammer and wearing light armor, the other, a woman with four tails of orange fox fur wield a bluish silver blade.

As the burning red sun slowly crawled below the horizon and a grand shadow was cast across the bridge, blue wisps of flame began to flicker along my blade as I drew upon my mana.

Standing in the middle of the bridge a set of gilded steel armor glinted for the final time. Dryis's eyes emanated a faint light as she circulated light mana to see.

Without the howling wind, or whispering breeze, without the cacophony of noise that usually overtook the forest I could hear nearly everything. The quiet ripple of fish breaking the water's surface. The flapping of a lone owl's wing.

It began with the scrape of a blade leaving its scabbard.

The glow and sizzle of a shining sword being released into the cool night air.

"GO!" {Dryis}

An echo.

A ripple.

Dust flew as I flashed forward, blazing wisps of flame dancing around me.

My hood flew back as I crashed to a halt, my blade slamming into the handle of Katia's hammer who's momentum was far greater than my own.

*BLAM!!!*

I was slammed into the floor as I silently cursed, barely rolling out of the way of a downward strike by Katia. The cobblestone bridge shuddered under the weight of the blow as she half swung, half dragged it towards me churning it through the ground and flinging it up as I leaned back, my hair being blown in all directions by the force behind the swing while I barely managed to hold onto the stone railing.

I barely managed to stand straight as Katia's hammer swung up and around, ice crystals bursting from its surface as she then swung down.

*CLAANNNGGGG!!!*

As the massive blow came crashing down, I gathered every wisp of flame and concentrated them onto the flat of the blade, blocking the devastating swing which drove my feet into the cobble below!

"HARAAGH!" {Fillia}}

With my palm flat against the blade of my sword, and fire searing into my hands, I managed to slant the steaming weapon and send Katia's weapon careening to the ground, sparks flying as the hammer slid across the fuller illuminating Katia's face and cold ocean-like eyes.

*THOOM!!!*

An opening.

I thrust forward like an arrow, the tip of my blade glancing her armor as she sidestepped.

'This fighting style…' {Fillia}

A wide arcing Hammer swing went over my head as I ducked, a cold wind causing my cloak to billow as I looked up at the looming Katia.

I leapt back to try and gain some distance, however my feet slid as I tried to land. I grasped fruitlessly to the railing of the bridge, sliding down to my knees as I slipped to the floor. As the remaining wisps of flame coalesced on my blade again, I looked down to see that in the same cold arc that she had swung, she froze the bridge behind me.

*SWOOOSH!*

My ears suddenly perked as something came flying towards me. Gathering flame in my palm I just barely managed to blast myself out of the way of a disastrous swing, further burning my palm.

Sent spinning by my evasive maneuver, I was disoriented by not only my own dizziness, but the shards of ice that now shimmered blue in the light of my foxfire. My eyes flicked from one direction to the next, searching for any sign of the massive tiger beastwoman.

Suddenly, from the shadows Katia's hammer came flying at me! I scrambled to block the flying hammer with my sword, which was then sent flying off along with her hammer behind me.

The surprise attack knocked me off balance and sent my sword spinning into the air. I guess that means no more empathic damage. Not that I can worry about that.

*BLAM!!!*

Katia came slamming into me from the front, launching us both into the frozen ground, sending shards of ice into the air, giving me small slashes on my cheeks.

Sharp claws stabbed into my shoulders and gripped me as her ocean blue eyes steamed, staring down at me with neither curiosity or hatred. Only calm.

Breathing in, I sucked in my gut, brought my knees to my chest, and shunted my heels into the chin of Katia.

She reeled back and staggered as I leapt into the air, before coming back down into an axe kick.

Katia blocked it, defending against it with her vambrace. She then flung me back, recovering her own balance.

Hitting the ground, I rolled and slipped, my small sharp claws scratching into the ice as I struggled to gain some form of purchase on the slippery surface.

Katia's tail suddenly slapped across my face, a cold sharp feeling following as it crawled across my eyelids, which closed before the blow landed.

I tried to open them, but failed to do so.

She had frozen my eyelids shut. With little more than a light tail slap.

'Her frost control has gotten much better.' {Fillia}

My ears twitched as I listened for even the slightest crack in the ice, or scrape on its surface. I knew if I brought my hands up to clear my eyes it would be game over.

All I could do was listen.

My heartbeat was quickening, pumping my adrenaline filled blood throughout my body.

*clank*

It was soft, almost imperceptible, yet it was the only thing I needed to hear.

With the heat burning and peeling the skin off my knuckles I threw a foxfire engulfed punch straight into…

.

.

.

.

A metal pole?

*BLAM!!!*

"ACK!" {Fillia}

A heavy strike smashed into my abdomen, flinging me like a ragdoll as spittle flew from my mouth.

Coughing and inhaling deeply I wiped my eyes with my sleeve, revealing to me the blurry figure of Katia, hammer in hand. So that's what clanked.

Raising it over her head she prepared to take the end swing of the match. As I took a deep breath and prepped to take the hit, a metallic smell caused my nose to wrinkle.

My eyes widened and hope filled my chest.

I instantly gave up on giving up, rolling quickly to the side as the hammer came down!

*THOOOOMMMM!!!*

Though Katia noticed and attempted to react in time by speeding up her swing, all she hit was dirt and dust.

I then grabbed something leathery and hard, gripping it with all my might as I then whirled and caught katia, mid-swing.

My blade pointing under her raised arms and right at her exposed side.
