Chapter 22: Chapter 22 The Dinner
For her whole life, Chloe had never expected that she would be pushed away by her mother one day.
What was Laura thinking? Did she favor Kevin over her own daughter?
While waiting for the elevator, Chloe turned her back to Laura. "Mom, you have been treating me so coldly after Kevin came back. Do you really think you can please Kevin in this way?"
Chloe thought she would struggle with saying these. But the words just came out so easily and casually.
While Laura didn't reply. Nor did she change her expression slightly.
Chloe sighed before drawing her conclusion, "I believe even if you die for him, he won't care about you."
Kevin had been indifferent to Chloe and she never knew the reason.
As she grew up, she realized that he hated the facts that Ben married Laura while Grandpa Johnson preferred Chloe.
Kevin seemed to have noticed this later, so he didn't want to see Chloe or Laura at all. He even had achieved absolute alienation from them.
Chloe did try to make peace with Kevin. But he never accepted her. Later, she felt so tired of seeing Laura trying to please Kevin over these years.
As the elevator arrived, Chloe left without looking back, "Mom, I'll wait for you to take me home."
What she didn't say was 'Please don't make me wait for too long.'
While leaving the hospital, she was still depressed. She was ready to call a taxi but stopped by Nancy suddenly.
Nancy walked to her with a smile, "Why are you here alone, Chloe?"
"I came to visit a patient."
"It seems that you've recovered well. Daniel must have taken good care of you!" Nancy checked her like a really loving sister.
Chloe nodded, "What about you? How are you doing recently?"
Hearing this, Nancy looked at her watch and shook her head, "Busy as usual. I have an operation later. So I have to go now."
Before Nancy left, she added, "I'd like to invite Daniel to dinner tonight. Will you come with him?"
Her with Daniel having dinner alone? Were they getting close recently?
"Sure," Chloe nodded. Somehow she didn't want them together alone.
Later, Daniel and Chloe came to Nancy for dinner as promised.
On their way to Nancy's house, Chloe stopped to buy a bunch of exquisite flowers.
"Nancy, thanks for inviting me!" Chloe smiled and handed the red roses to Nancy who seemed to be in a good mood.
Daniel followed Chloe, with all the gifts she had just bought in his hands.
"Did Daniel buy these flowers for me? So beautiful. I love it." Nancy smiled broadly.
Did Nancy like Daniel? Chloe suddenly realized it. But maybe she overthought?
While Nancy was putting the dishes on the table. Daniel came to the kitchen to help her since the pot was really heavy.
"Maybe you should wear a pair of gloves. This pot is hot." Nancy came close to him and her hair was brushing his arm.
Daniel shook his head, directly taking the pot out without accepting gloves from Nancy.
Chloe was standing outside the kitchen. She wanted to help but considering her injury, they wouldn't allow it.
As Daniel passed by, he looked at her, "What are you doing standing here?"
"Nothing."
But her eyes were fixed on Daniel, the successful president of a giant group coming out of the kitchen with a pot, just like everyone else. Chloe didn't see this very often.
Daniel thought maybe Chloe was bored. After putting the pot on the table, he sat next to Chloe.
While Chloe moved away a little.
"What for?" Daniel glanced at her with a meaningful look.
Chloe lowered her head without saying anything.
"You look unhappy. Did anything happen in the hospital?" Daniel asked gently. She was quiet after she came back from the hospital.
Feeling cared about by Daniel, Chloe couldn't help breathing out deeply, "Do you think that my mom will abandon me?"
Well, Daniel didn't see this coming. He had been loved by his parents and never bothered by this. He went silent suddenly, not sure how to comfort Chloe.
Chloe rubbed her face, shaking her head slightly, "Poor me! Neither my father nor my mother cares about me. No one loves me."
"That's not true. Grandpa Johnson loves you. I think maybe your parents have their own ways of showing their love."
The next second, he reached out his hand, patting Chloe on her head. While she looked up at him, his hand warm and his eyes tender.
Coming out of the kitchen, Nancy happened to see this. She calmed down quickly and put on a bright smile.
"You've been waiting for a long time. You must be hungry now. Let's enjoy the meal then." Nancy poured wine for everyone.
"Thanks."
Chloe was observing Nancy in secret who was truly a lady from a rich family, elegant and noble.
She had to admit that Nancy really had good taste and knew how to live her life. Who could refuse such a perfect lady?
"Since Daniel doesn't like spicy food, I prepared some light dishes. I hope Chloe won't mind. By the way, what food do you like, Chloe?" Nancy took a sip of her wine.
However, the wine wasn't so tasty as it should be.
Or maybe she lost interest in appreciating the wine herself.
After all, it should be only her and Daniel for dinner.
