There was only one problem.
“California’s a lot different from Ohio,” Harvey said. “I’ve never lived anywhere but here and wherever the Army moved us.”
“It’s a hell of a lot better than anywhere the Army sent you.” Zach leaned forward and reached for Harvey’s hand. “I know it’s not Ohio. But it’s not nearly as scary as, say, North Africa.”
“That’s because you grew up there. I won’t know anyone.”
“You’ll meet people. Hell, you’re a great mechanic. You’ll get a good job and you’ll meet all kinds of people. Besides, you’ll know somebody. You know me.”
“Nobody’s going to want to hire a gimp,” Harvey argued. “Ted gave me the job because he knew what I could do. Because he knew my family, and probably because he felt more than a little sorry for me. Out there, I’m just going to be another vet who came back wrong.”
