“Dennis, listen to me,” he began.

“No, you listen to me,” Dennis interrupted. “Give me my keys and just—just go away, will you?”

He stopped and held out his hand.

The men stared at each other; then Luca dropped the keys in Dennis’ palm.

“You have to come with me. Your car is at my house; after that you can leave.” Luca said. “I have the things that were in your car there, you’ll want them.”

Dennis looked surprised for a moment, then indignant, after that he sighed.

“Okay, come on,” he mumbled, and continued on to the parking lot. A few yards further, he stopped to rest. Fine sweat formed on his upper lip among the unshaven peach fuzz and he paled visibly. He walked on, stubborn as hell, but had to stop again. Luca could see his hands trembling

“Did you eat this morning?” Luca asked, putting his hand under Dennis’ arm. Dennis pulled away.
