“I adored him!” It was the first time Norma had seen any positive emotion from Cam. “He had some of the best ideas I’ve seen come out of South America.”
“I’ve heard that President Ascensio was a very special person. I wish I could have met him. Was that your impression of him?”
“I felt like he was the Martin Luther King, Jr. of his country,” Cam started, then she let the silence expand.
“Tell me about him,” Norma urged. “What impressed you the most?”
Cam talked on and on about Raul. Norma could tell he’d made a big impression on her. This was the first topic Cam had openly discussed.
“Did you all like him?” Norma finally asked.
“Yes,” was Cam’s response. She offered no other information.
Norma looked at the woman who only stared out the window. She let the silence go on for a moment, then asked “Should we go on? Or would you like to quit for today?”
“Sure. Let’s go on.”
“You were kept in solitary confinement after the new president commuted your sentence?”
