Just when he’d concluded Rolf’s bringing him home after working in the clinic in town was nothing more than a polite gesture to make up for Rolf’s standoffishness, one of the farrier’s assistants came into the clinic, saying that Rolf wanted to see him.

Dr. Turner smiled. “You must be making a positive impression on Rolf,” the senior vet said. “He’s pretty particular about who works on horses with him.”

Neil sent the assistant back to Rolf, saying he’d be over as soon as possible. Neil was scheduled to do the weekly health check on the tour teams that morning. However, Dr. Turner said he’d do that so Neil could attend to Rolf’s request. Neil had to restrain himself from being overly grateful to his boss. A hug of thanks might be a bit over the top
