I couldn’t help the small smile that worked its way across my face. I shook my head at my own ridiculousness and walked down the hall in my rented shoes. The door to Carrie’s bedroom gaped open, the room a bit depressing in its emptiness. I pulled the door shut, bypassed the bathroom entirely, and walked into my room, kicking off the shoes with relief. After eight hours of wear, they pinched. I had enough sense to hang up the rented tux and then fell into bed wearing nothing but my boxers. It was late, I was tired, and I was telling myself I wasn’t going to miss sharing space with my closest friend. Maybe if I kept repeating it, it would become true.
