It seemed the scent of orange blossoms was in the air, in spite of it being late winter.

While Barbara sent photos and frequent updates on our son’s progress, her letters obviously gave me scant information about what else was going on in her personal life.

Therefore, I was stunned when, as Jeremy and I were having our after-dinner brandy—Montdidier, a gift from his father for an operation well run—and going through the day’s mail, I opened the traditional lavender envelope and scanned its contents. “Good lord, Barbara’s getting married as soon as she’s graduated from that university she’s been attending!”

“Really? She’s to be a June bride then?”

“So it seems.” I frowned as I continued reading. Since the Coronation was scheduled for the beginning of the month, we should be able to attend her wedding.

“You seem surprised.”

“Well…well, I’d no idea she was seeing someone. She’s never said.”
