“Good idea.” He handed me the keys.

It only took a minute, and when I returned, I sniffed the air. “Something smells good.”

Mother smiled at me. “Gregor’s making dinner for you,” she said. “Steak with artichoke and cherry pepper sauté.”

“I’ve had it before,” I told Mark. “It should hit the spot.”

“Yeah, even with that sandwich, it’s been a long time since lunch.”

“Why don’t you freshen up?” Mother suggested. “And if you’ll give me the pages you want deciphered, I’ll get started on that right now.”

“That’s a good idea. If you’ll excuse me for a moment?” I didn’t use the powder room a few steps away but made my way up the stairs to the second floor.

I didn’t doubt Mark would be right behind me, so once I was in my boyhood bedroom, I moved fast. I slid Man o’ War off his base and put those damned photographs in the compartment. They fit with a millimeter or two to spare.

I managed to get Man o’ War back in place just as Mark walked into the room.
