“Mr. Wells? Sure.” They’d met him at a McDonald’s when Gordy had been invited to a birthday party for one of the kids in his class a few years before. Mr. Wells had seemed to understand the sketch Gordy had made, one of the few regular people who did.

“Call him.”

“He said not to until I was eighteen.”

“Gordy. Go out the basement door, get as far away from here as you can, and then find a place that has good cell reception and call him.” She placed the cell phone Charles had given her into Gordy’s hand and closed his fingers over it. “And for God’s sake, don’t be seen.”

He nodded, unable to speak because his mouth was so dry. Ma had never used the phone; it could be too easy to trace them.

“Once you talk to him, throw that phone in the nearest trash can and get out of there.” She covered her mouth with her hand. “Do you remember where Aunt Delilah used to live?”

“The condo in Aspen Reach?”

“No. The one where we stayed with her for a time.”
