“I know, it makes no sense. The dinner party is Saturday night.” The microwave dinged, and I went to it and took out the bacon. The plate was microwave safe, but it still tended to get hot, so I took care not to burn my fingers. “They want me there tomorrow, so I can get settled in. According to Schutt, it’s to make up for the aggravation with both my book covers. They’re paying for the hotel.”

“As they should.” Mark’s brows met over the bridge of his nose. “But I’m telling you, I don’t like it.” His words were rife with suspicion. “I don’t trust them.”

“Sometimes a dinner party is just a dinner party.”

“Fine. I’ll—Wait a second. Why are you cooking bacon in the microwave?”

I cleared my throat. “It’s turkey bacon.”

“Dammit. Okay, never mind about that.” He took out his cell phone and fiddled with it for a few minutes, then nodded and placed his phone on the counter. “There’s a flight out of National tomorrow midmorning.”
