“Why are you so sad?” André asked in a gentle voice.

“Billy was my best friend until my dad took him away from me.” Another small sniffle escaped.

André’s eyes went from Rémy to Ian. “A charm can’t change who you are. Your father was who he was, and a charm wouldn’t have changed that. You were right not to waste your money.”

“That’s what I thought,” Ian said sadly.

“Some charms do work. What that good luck charm would have brought you is good luck in your own endeavors, not someone else’s,” Rémy told him.

“My luck has certainly changed since I met you. I have a beautiful home to stay in for a while, and I hope I made some friends.” André came over and gave him a hug. Rémy growled. André suggested that Roland make popcorn. “I’ll get the bowls and some soda.” He asked Ian, “What would you like to drink?”

“He drinks Coke Zero, just like I do. Bring down a carton. We can put it in the small refrigerator.”
