"We are destined to die."
The long-haired girl who kept glancing at Yu Xuelan finally spoke up softly, "Um, are you a perhaps a cultivator?"
Yu Xuelan nodded and examined the girls in the cage and gradually deciphered the situation. To lighten the mood, Yu Xuelan started a conversation with the timid girl. "Yue? That's a pretty name!"
"Ah, thank you! Um..."
"You can call me Lin Yuhe," Yu Xuelan smiled.
"Really? Lin Yuhe, are you not afraid?"
"Of course, I'm afraid!"
"..." Yue looked at Yu Xuelan's grinning face that displayed absolutely no fear.
"You're quite strange Yuhe," Yue laughed.
Yu Xuelan smiled, "Is that a compliment?"
…
"Yue! Look what I made!" Yu Xuelan beamed in happiness and showed Yue the "snow" rabbit she made of the dirt from the ground.
Even though they were creepy and disfigured, Yue laughed. "It looks so cute! Teach me how to make one!"
The short-haired girl stared at the two who were playing around with curiosity. Xuelan noticed the girl watching them with sobriety but returned the gaze back with a childish grin.
"May I know your name?" Yu Xuelan asked.
"My name? It's Meixiang."
"Meixiang...?" she muttered and asked, "You know, you look extremely familiar, have we met before?"
"Really? I don't think so."
"Yuhe, you said you were a cultivator before. May I ask which sect you are from?" Yue asked.
Yu Xuelan smiled, "Hai-"
"Hai?" Yue repeated in confusion.
"Ah, I'm from ShenMing Wu."
The girls' expressions seemed to be even more distraught than when Yu Xuelan first arrived here. All hope fleeted from their eyes upon hearing Yu Xuelan's words.
"ShenMing Wu?" Meixiang mumbled in disbelief.
Yu Xuelan reassured them, "Don't worry, Sect Master Wu is here as well, although I only became a disciple recently."
"There's no hope for us," Meixiang muttered while despair smeared both their faces.
"Why?"
"Sect Master Wu hates HaiShen Yu. I'm sure of it."
Yu Xuelan stared at the girl in confusion before widening her clouded eyes in realization, asking, "Are you two... From HaiShen Yu?"
Meixiang and Yue glanced at each other before nodding in unison.
Something clicked in Yu Xuelan's mind. No wonder Meixiang looked vaguely familiar, though other than her face, she couldn't seem to remember anything else about her, nor could she remember anything about Yue. Well, it had been years after all, and HaiShen Yu owned four residences so it was impossible for her to memorise all the disciples or maids across the entire sect.
"Yeah, he probably hates HaiShen Yu," Yu Xuelan said.
Meixiang added, "Mn, after everything our sect has done to the Feather Temple, why wouldn't he despise HaiShen Yu? If he sees us in this prison he'll leave both of us here to rot."
Hearing Meixiang characterizing Wu Zhitian as if he was a ruthless, patriotic tyrant made her chest feel heavy. "Well, I can't tell you that Sect Master Wu doesn't hate HaiShen Yu. He probably harbours sour feelings towards the sect, and that's the truth. But he is not the type of scum to let someone die just because he dislikes the collective."
Hearing Yu Xuelan's unusual tone, Meixiang was surprised, but she was still in disbelief that the Sect Master of ShenMing Wu would actually help "trash" like them.
After the unjust treatment that HaiShen Yu had exacted against ShenMing Wu, it would more be even more strange if Wu Zhitian did not dislike them at all.
Seeing how depressed Meixiang was, Yu Xuelan sighed, "Let's just say Sect Master Wu doesn't come and help us, then we can just get out together!"
"But we'll die," Yue retaliated.
"So what? We'll die either way even if we sit here like dead fish or try to leave."
"Well..."
"Either way, it doesn't matter. Because we'll die, anyway! The sooner you die, the less suffering you'll have! Oh but I'm not forcing you guys to die with me," Yu Xuelan professed cheerily.
Meixiang and Yue blinked in confusion at Yu Xuelan's words. Even though it appeared to be ruthless, it was the truth. Even if there were so many things they wanted to do in this life, death was already around the corner.
Yu Xuelan darted her eyes between Yue and Meixiang and thought these motivational speeches weren't really her thing. Was she even preaching right? She scratched her head and felt like her brain frying up, burning into crisps and ashes, as no other words to improve their spirits could escape her mouth.
Although the two girls were reluctant, they believed in Yu Xuelan to a considerable degree.
Yu Xuelan rested her eyes and tried to devise a plan to look for Lin Changying quickly. If she truly died for the second time so quickly, it would be extremely pitiful.
She was dreaming and in that dream, she was in an area dimly lit by the night, but she knew exactly where she was. It was the pavilion of the Gou residence, the place Yu Xuelan lived in the past. However, it was devoid of life.
Why was she here? She scoffed. Even her dreams wanted to haunt her. It was like her past was constantly chasing after her.
Since she was dreaming, her surroundings felt blurry and she wasn't even sure if she had legs. Maybe she was just a floating head, who knows. But how could she not recognize this place?
Suddenly, she heard light footsteps and turned her head around instantly. Even in her dream state, she was still cautious of her surrounding noises.
Those white robes drifted along with the breeze like untainted fresh petals and the pale skin tone that accentuated the pink lips. He stood there silently with his long lashes lowered, covering his wavering pupils.
"Wu... Zhitian?"
The boy didn't say anything but he slowly lifted his eyes and they locked eyes once again.
"Wu Zhiti-"
She blinked to make sure what she was seeing was right. There were tears running from his eyes and his expression was something she had never seen before. It was truly despairing.
"What..."
Yu Xuelan furrowed her brows and walked up to him. But before she could say anything to him, the boy instantly hugged her tightly and her face was buried in his chest.
Were his shoulders always this broad?
His shoulders were trembling and so were his arms. She could hear his silent sobs clearly as he attempted to hold back his inconsistent breaths.
She had never once seen him like this. Although he always seemed like a shy and timid youth in the past, Yu Xuelan never thought she would see him cry like this.
His shaking voice was mumbling sentences, yet all he repeated was.
"I am too weak."
"I'm sorry."
And, "Please don't leave me."
