Winter was slowly loosening its grip, but spring wasn't much kinder a season. Everything was still cold and miserable, but it was starting to get warm enough to be wet and muddy. Neither he nor his horse were very happy by the time Omar called a halt for the day.

He had one more week of travel before he'd reach the capital. If Symaia and Astira weren't there, he didn't know what he'd do—but there was no point in worrying about a problem that didn't exist yet. At least, there was no point in adding another to his pile.

After tending his horse and seeing she was settled for the night, Omar started a pot of soup since he'd stopped early enough to have the time for it, fixed himself a cup of tea, and tried to read one of the cheap books he'd brought along to keep the loneliness at bay.

So far, the plan wasn't working.
