Sitting on the clean white carpet of a pink room was a young girl. Her brown hair was tied into two buns and her adorable brown eyes squeezed shut in concentration and on the verge of tears. Her small hand outstretched and clenched tightly as she tried for the 98th time to move her broken unicorn pencil.
She had gotten it last week only to have it broken by her friend the day before, she had known it wasn't on purpose, Jalyn had only been trying to show off her telekinetic deviation.
As tears started running down her face she remembered the homeless man she had seen when she was younger.

"Mommy what's that man doing" asked little Amaris pointing at the man begging on the curb
"He's begging." Her mother replied
"Why?" inquired Amaris
"Look at his wrist," she slowly explained," he has an untouchable marking, which means he doesn't have a deviation like most people do."

Her parents watched their daughter with their hearts breaking as fear consumed them. The knowledge that their daughter was going to have to work 100 times harder than everyone else just to have a chance to stay alive.
Everyone else in her class of 10yr olds had gotten their deviation. She was the oldest in her class so she should have gotten her 'superpower' first. The little girl suddenly sat up and looked at her parents.
"I want to be a hero that can save all of the good people from all the bad people! But..." She stopped and looked up to her parents with tears building in her big doe eyes. "nothing is working."
"Oh honey, you don't have to have a deviation to save people " the little girls' mother quickly knelt down next to her and pulled the little girl into a hug " you can be a doctor or build creative technology to help people" She promised the little girl, a teary smile covering up the lie. " just keep learning and trying your best and you will be able to be almost anything"
-----
~7 years later~
'You can succeed if you get good grades'
That's what she used to think. She had been naive.
The amount of weight that society had put on deviation had become so large that if you were an 'untouchable' you would have to excel at everything else in life just to get by.
Almost thirty years ago huge shadows had shown up with monsters walking out, Four years after that, powers or as the government now calls them deviations started showing up. Military service was mandatory, and each person was supposed to start right after high school graduation. Deviations were the easiest to learn at 18-20 years old. Her country would have made it earlier had there not been laws in place. They all wanted to cultivate strong youths to be loyal and fight for them. Only them.
In the military you would be forced to fight against the monsters or as the government calls them, mutations. The death rate for non-deviants was 70% and even if they were able to live then they would most likely be crippled.
So she decided she would be the best in all classes and become so intelligent that they wouldn't put in the direct line of fire. Even if it was only a pipe dream, she was going to hold on to it with everything she had because that's the only thing she could do.
So she studied and studied because 'You can live if you get good grades' at least she had hoped so.
That was before they started killing everyone off
