Chapter 6: Midham and Begard

Del began walking towards Begard. The town was not very far from Midham. It would only take thirty minutes by horse. If Del ran in the direction of Begard, he would arrive there in around two hours.

The road toward Begard was paved with stones. The road to Begard wasn't dangerous due to the continuous patrol from the knights of the Elbanian Kingdom.

It would be exhausting and Del knew about that. However, a 1911 pistol was well worth it alongside extra crackers. With those crackers, he would be able to take a quest located a little bit further without spending much money just for the food.

The clothes that Del was wearing was still the same as the one which was given by the Elbanian Kingdom. He washed the clothes once a week when he could afford not to go outside of the inn. He would usually dry his clothes upstairs while waiting for them to dry with the other adventurers. He planned to buy new clothes if he had the money.

Speaking of clothing…

"Pidma, are you there?" Del asked while running in the road.

[Personal Information and Data Management Assistant Initiated]

[Hello there, what can I do for you?]

"Pidma, last night, I saw that you can give me something other than guns. Can you give me clothing?" Del asked.

[Yes. I can give you anything besides guns for a modest price]

"Cool, give me a new pair of clothing then," Del said.

[Give you? You need to pay for it, Del. You better have the money.]

"Is five silver coins enough for a new pair of clothing?" Del asked.

[Calculating Conversion From Coins to Dollars. User Has 10$]

"Does that mean I have enough money to buy a new pair of clothing?" Del asked.

[No, I'm afraid not.]

"As expected…" Del sighed.

Del knew that he didn't have enough money. Even the cheapest clothing in the clothing store was twelve silver coins and it was used. A new white shirt would cost him around fifteen silver coins. Del couldn't afford it yet.

[However, if you need an item, I can arrange a quest for you. Some people actually have demand for some items. Others are interested in having someone disappear. There is also some demand on the market for information.]

"Wait, well, show me a quest for clothing then," Del said as he continued walking.

[Ok.]

▬▬▬

[White Wolf Fur Demand]

Alright, I found that someone in Midham wants to buy a white wolf fur. If you come to the guild and finish the quest, you should get enough money to buy a new pair of clothing. I can arrange a loadout for you to use if you finish the quest.

Task:

[Finish Gathering Wolf Fur Quest] [1x]

Reward: [M1943 Combat Uniform] [20 Silver Coins] [50 Copper Coins]

▬▬▬

"White Wolf??? Pidma, that thing is a D-rank threat. There is no way I can't deal with that thing. I even doubt that bullet would penetrate the thick skin of the wolf itself. However, if you give me a rifle," Del said to Pidma.

[Want me to put it for later?]

"Yes, I'll take that quest when I become strong enough. In the meantime, I'll just focus on the task that you give for me right now," Del said.

[Very well then.]

Del continued walking on the road that led to Begard. The road that led to Begard was bordered by two locations. One was a mountain located on the north of the road. The other one was a forest located south of the road. Both places were known to be dangerous places and the guild advised anyone not to go there unless necessary.

Talking about location, the mountain of the north was dangerous because it was a breeding ground for cold weather monsters. One of the monsters that Del knew was the White Wolf. It was known to be able to kill a novice adventurer in just one slash. That mountain was also known to be the home of the mythical ice dragon.

As a result of the combination between dangerous monsters and a lair for an ice dragon, that mountain got a danger rating of C-rank. Ice dragon itself was an S-rank threat that required a full party of A-rank adventurers just to subjugate.

[Del, could I ask for something? What's your biggest fear of this world?]

"What do you mean? I think I fear everything in this world. I don't have any certified education in this world. I don't have any connection in this world. I don't have any strength to survive in this world. My only friends want me to go away. The kingdom banished me from my only hope of surviving. The only thing that I want right now is to live decently," Del said to Pidma.

[That's a tough life you have there.]

"Trust me, I'm a high-school boy turned into adventurer without any preparation," Del said.

[I see.]

"Don't you worry about it, my life is going to be short anyway," Del said.

[Not under my watch, Del.]

"Right, you're kinda like a guardian angel, you know?" Del asked.

[Yeah. I agree with that.]

After two hours of sprinting and stopping. Del finally arrived in Begard, drenching in sweat. Begard was a bigger town than Midham. It was located right on the east side of Midham. Del had visited the town multiple times during his time as an adventurer.

It had been a month since he became an adventurer. He was not as novice as he used to be, but he was certainly as poor as when he started. Now, he had to find Lebisa street first. The road in the Elbanian Kingdom usually had a nameplate, it made things way easier.

Del walked in the direction of the center of the town. The center of Begard was a fountain. The fountain would lead him to every single street on Begard. Begard might be a big city, but it was not as big as cities like New York or anything in the modern world.

"Sir, do you know where Lebisa street is?" Del asked one of the bystanders.

"Boy, what did you do to get that kind of sweat?" The bystander asked Del.

"I ran from Midham to Begard, that's where my sweat came from, sir," Del answered as he wiped his head.

"Boy, you can take a horse, can't you?" The bystander asked.

"Sir, respectfully, do you know where Lebisa street is?" Del insisted.

"Sorry, it's right around the corner of the fountain," the bystander answered.

"Thank you," Del said.

'Goddamn old hag wasting my time,' Del cursed quietly as he left for Lebisa street.

Del looked at the buildings along Lebisa street. At first glance, all of it looked the same. All of them were buildings made from bricks and had two floors. Luckily, every building had a number plate in front of it. Del just had to find the correct one.

"27… 27… 27…," Del searched for the house, "Aha, 27!"

Del approached the house with the package in his hand. The owner of the package might not feel comfortable with Del's sweaty palm. But well, if he wanted the wedding ring, he had to get it from Del.

Del knocked on the door, "Excuse me, a package from Midham."

A woman opened the door. It was an old woman, probably in her mid-40s. "Young boy, what can I do for you?" The woman looked at the box that Del brought, "Oh my, thank you so much. I'll send a word to Midham that the package arrives safely." The woman took the package.

"Thank you, ma'am," Del left the building.

Del sighed as he gulped down the glass of water at the inn. It was exhausting, but Del got his money. Rina was nice enough to give Del a free glass of water. It usually cost around twenty copper coins just for a glass of water.

"Del, why did you run to Begard? You can take a horse, you know?" Rina asked.

"Rina, that's a private matter, ok? It's not like I can't walk. I just want to save money, you know?" Del said as he gulped down another glass of water.

"Haha, I see. Anyway, Del, I have to go back to work, you take a rest, ok?" Rina left Del's room after she put a big mug of water on the desk of his room.

"Now, let's see. Pidma, are you there?" Del asked.

[I'm here. Do you want to take the rewards for the quest?]

"Sure, bring it on."

[Alright. Dispensing Reward…]

Suddenly, a big metallic box appeared on Del's desk. It spilled the glass of water that Rina brought for him.

"Dang it, my glass of water," Del said.

However, his disappointment was wiped away by the sudden appearance of the metal box. He stood up from his bed and looked at the metal box.

"Let's see what we have here," Del opened the box.

Chapter 7: 1911 Pistol vs Slime

Inside of that metal box, there were the items that PIDMA promised to give to Del. There were three .45 ACP magazines filled with bullets. There were also three packs of crackers inside of an MRE bag.

Del always saw the thing like MRE and pistols on the Internet. However, he never tried it out himself. There was also the sterile gauzes inside of the metal box which was basically a fabric useful for packing wound. Del remembered using it to cover his wound when he fell down the stairs.

"Not bad," Del picked up the 1911 pistol.

It was a black pistol with wooden furnishings on its grip. It was an old pistol that was made way before the Second World War. It was chambered in .45 ACP. The bullet should be able to penetrate most non-demonic animals. However, Del doubted the bullet would be able to wound any demonic animal that entered the category of monsters.

"Pidma, what's this bullet is made of? Just copper and lead or is there a steel penetrator inside of this bullet?" Del asked.

[The bullet is .45 ACP FMJ. It's basically the standard bullet that you will find in 1911. You might want to upgrade the bullet later.]

It was Pidma's way of saying that the bullet sucked. Still, it was a giveaway item so Del shouldn't even protest about it. Del also found a pistol holster inside of the metal box. It was a drop-leg holster so he could put it right on his upper thigh.

There was a guide on how to put the holster too. It shouldn't be hard. Del followed the instruction and put the holster on his thigh. He put the 8-round magazines inside of his pants pocket since he didn't have enough money to buy a tactical rig.

Still, for him, being able to defend himself from bandits was more than enough. At first, Del also thought just like anyone else from another world that bandits were dumb creatures that raided carriages for money.

However, reality hit him differently when he got robbed by the bandits. They essentially surrounded Del while pointing their weapons at him. They usually ambushed any merchant that went out of a town without enough escort. Del was lucky that he didn't get killed since he didn't even have any money in his pocket.

They were big in numbers and usually consisted of beginner combatants. A group of bandits usually had a threat rank of D. They needed a single D-rank adventurer to eliminate or a group consisted of E-rank adventurers. However, it also varied depending on the groups.

"Del, can you come downstairs?" Rina called Del from downstairs.

"Sure," Del got out of his room and he walked downstairs.

Downstairs, he couldn't find where Rina was. There was only her daughter on the receptionist's desk.

He asked Lisa, "Lisa, where's your mother?"

"She's in the kitchen. Anyway, my mother asked me to tell you that she needs help with pest control. A slime kept eating the vegetables that the townsfolk planted. They wanted an adventurer to deal with it. Luckily, there was you," Lisa said.

"So, you want me to exterminate those slimes for you?" Del asked.

"Yes. Don't tell me you're afraid of slimes. They don't even hurt you," Lisa said.

"I know," Del said.

"Alright, the slime is in the grassland on the back of the Inn, deal with it," Lisa said.

"Damn, Lisa, you don't need to be that authoritative with me, you're not my boss," Del said.

"Well, technically, I am your boss since my mother is your boss, so, get moving, ok?" Lisa said.

"Fine. Three free nights, right?" Del asked.

"I kept my mom's words," Lisa said.

"Ok," Del said as he left the inn through the front door.

Del headed to the back of the inn through the small road that bordered the inn and another building. The back of the inn was an enormous grassland. The grassland was one of the safest places that humans could traverse.

Grassland was rarely filled with dangerous monsters although anyone should be careful of small insects and animals. The grassland was usually used by townsfolk to plant something or to feed their cattle.

Slime was one of the monsters. The slime was put into the monster category because of its unusual behavior. This slime was actually herbivorous which meant they posed little to no threat to humans. Their size was as big as an ordinary bowling ball so it couldn't harm humans either.

They usually ate grass in the grassland, but this time, they were eating crops of the townsfolk. Killing slime was an easy task. All Del had to do was to destroy the core of the slime or the dark part inside of the slime itself.

If he just slashed through the slime, he would only tear apart the body of the slime itself. However, Del got another idea. Since slime was known to be very gelatinous and harmless. It might be a good idea to test his weapon at the slime.

1911 was rather accurate at close range, he just had to aim it right to the core of the slime itself. In that way, he also had an idea of the ballistic performance of the .45 ACP itself. It would give him an idea of how damaging the bullet was.

He walked to the grassland and he found the target.

"Emm, Pidma, can you give me an instruction on how to use this pistol?"

[First of all, insert the magazine into the empty magazine slot.]

Del inserted the magazine into the pistol.

[Then, you pull the slide backward.]

Del pulled the slide backward.

[Then you fire the gun.]

Del held the pistol firmly with his two hands. He aimed at the core of the slime. He pulled the trigger. .45 ACP flew to the core of the slime. Some parts of the slime exploded from the fragmentation of the bullet itself, much like a ballistic gel.

"Damn, I'm a good shooter for a first-timer," Del said as he put the pistol back at his holster.

[User Gains New Skill: Firearms Comprehension | Marksmanship ]

"Cool, I also have a new skill. What will this skill do? Can you explain it to me?" Del asked.

[Well, I'll just summarize it to you. PIDMA: OPENING GUIDE]

[Firearms Comprehension: The level of this skill will define the amount of recoil that you can handle, the speed of your reload, and your time in aiming down the sight of a firearm.]

[Marksmanship: The level of this skill will define the accuracy of any ranged weapon that you are shooting. An increase on this level will also increase the range of your weaponry.]

"Damn, so I have a new set of skills as well. Thanks, Pidma," Del said.

[Don't mention it. Anyway, by shooting your guns more, you can increase the level of these skills.]

"I understand," Del said.

Suddenly, Del got interrupted by someone. That someone was Lisa. She came to the back of the inn because of the loud noise of the gun. Luckily, Lisa didn't even notice that Del was carrying his gun inside of his holster.

Lisa tapped his back, "Del, did you just master a thunder spell or something?"

"No, but I just killed the slime," Del pointed his hand at the slime.

Lisa peeked at the carcass of the slime. The slime was dead, but Del noticed that the copper fragments were in the dead body of the slime itself. He feared that Lisa would ask him a question about that.

"Emm, my sword is shit so a little bit of it broke when I attacked the slime," Del gave his excuse.

"That's why you don't buy a five silver coins sword on sale, Del. A sword is supposed to be ten silver coins at the very least. Anyway, since you get the job done, I should tell my mother then," Lisa walked away.

"Thanks, Lisa," Del said.

"And Del, take a bath, will you? Maybe you should buy new clothes too, you stink," Lisa said.

Del just laughed it off. He had a blast with the gun even though he only fired two bullets. With that gun, he should be able to take a more dangerous quest later.
