Chapter 6: DAY 28

DAY 28

In the conference room at Mayo hospital. Five people were gathered for the third time in the last twenty-four hours. The meeting had always reached an impasse the past three times,

The Jury spoke in a somewhat somber tone, "This has to be amongst the longest sittings I have attended. Now, I know that this emotional for all of you, but it would be prudent if you all spoke at your own turn."

Mark spoke, "As Mr. Ethan's lawyer and legal representative, I am in full right to demand the execution of the DNR and execution of his organ donation form execution. He at the time of the undertaking was a sane adult and was of sound mind and body." His face was stoic though his eyes were puffy and his expression seemed to darken with each line he spoke.

"I completely disagree, Ethan had just submitted a resignation to settle some family issues. He who was an orphan for more than 20 years, got some clue of his family and decided to pursue it. Upon having some issues, he returns and works as a teacher. During this time, he makes a hasty, emotional and rash decision of signing a DNR. We can not probably condemn him to his death over an emotional decision." Dr. Rush spoke from her side, her eyes were red both from lack of sleep and crying.

During the last 24 hours, she and Mark had gotten into a lot of arguments, she often berating him in front of everyone. Though they were fiancé and fiancée, perhaps these arguments would break them up. Ethan and both of them had been friend since high school and were as close to each other as siblings. Fighting over something like this had taken its tool on both of them.

"You can be right, but we can not ascertain these facts Miss Rush," the grumpy looking lady spoke while looking at Dr. Eva,

"Dr. Ethan Grey was an asset to this hospital, his achievements to date clearly show that he would go on to save thousands if not millions of lives. Talent and perseverance like his is hard to come by. He did in fact, resign recently to settle some family issues. Yet despite all of that I believe his decision to be emotional and rash." She pinched in her piece hoping to get the judge to see the bigger picture.

"This has nothing to do with the fact of the matter that he signed that paper in complete knowing what it meant." Mark poke from the side.

"Will you please shut up lawyer mark, and let his friend mark speak." Miss Rush shouted at her fiancé.

"Calm down, calm down. There is no need to get personal here. He is just doing his job." The dean spoke, trying to keep the meeting civil. From all the time he had spent, in the room."

Just then, a resident entered the room while huffing," The patient in room 202 is crashing, she had obstructive cardiomyopathy, she needs a new heart. We have checked the list, she has been on it for 7 years but they never found a match, she has panda blood."

The dean knew, who else had panda blood. He looked around the table to see that, Mark had lost all color from his face,

"We need you to make a decision."

In another room in the hospital a girl was sitting on the bed, The pain in her chest had been consistently rising. She had at this point in her life gotten used to it. She thought it to be normal, a nurse came in to check her vitals. She asked the nurse about Mr. Grey, just like the last time she had done.

'He is in critical condition. The doctors are trying their best, the same reply she had gotten for the past twelve hours.' She was starting to get agitated; she was all alone and the only person who could help her was battling life and death, she considered calling her father but she just couldn't bring herself to do it.

Suddenly, she started feeling light headed, she knew something was wrong, the pain in her chest was getting more intense. She reached for the alarm button to press it, though she knew that even if they reached in time, the chances of seeing the daylight again were slim. She hoped that Mr. Ethan would survive.

Dr. Eva was moving towards her room, both exhausted and angry. She wanted to curse at Ethan's stupidity and Mark's loyalty to his friend. The judge had denied them intervention and now Ethan's heart was going to be stopped. She had hoped that he would be able to live without the vent, yet it was a pipe dream.

Mark was following her; she knew him as Ethan's friend and dr. Rush's fiancé. They had met on a couple of occasion; he was always the serious one among them. Dr. Rush was a troublemaker and Ethan was well an eccentric. He was dedicated impulsive and focused yet to be his friend was a chore and a blessing, she knew how protective over the few people he considered friends he was, yet otherwise he hated social interactions. How someone like him became a teacher was beyond her?

"If you are here to convince me, take part in the transplant, I have already made my views quite clear. There are other very capable doctors who can take care of it, plus I don't think she could afford me, "She added with a snide remark.

"Please, Dr. Eva, you are the best surgeon in the city, you have to do this for Ethan. As for the cost you don't have to worry about it." Mark spoke with conviction perhaps there was more to the girl.

"Why Mark, give me one good reason why I should be a part of this operation, which I was rooting against,"

"Do it for Ethan, he would have wanted her to have the best,"

"Why? Who exactly is the girl and what is her relationship with Ethan, it can not be her girlfriend we all know she is too young for that, well I think she is too young for that,"

Mark was quiet at that question; he couldn't tell her. Or he could, he was at an impasse. Dr. Eva could see the conflicting thoughts on his face.

"A brilliant and accomplished doctor, gives his resignation and vanishes. He comes back after some time to teach at a local school. He signs a DNR and signs up his heart to be donated to a student there. There are more than a couple of coincidences there, and if you can not even answer that question. Then you don't need me in the OR as much as you think you do," she said while turning away from him.

"She is the reason for him becoming a doctor. She is the reason he accomplished so much in so little time. Everything he ever did was for her. Do you want to know who she is; SHE IS HIS GODDAMN OBSESSION? A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD OBSESSION. DO YOU THINK I LIKED WHAT I WAS DOING IN THAT ROOM? I HAD TO ARGUE TO LET MY FRIEND DIE. JUST TO SAVE ONE GIRL." He shouted, and her expression changed at every word that came out oh his mouth. She could see the pain at losing his friend, the hopelessness, the burden, the anguish everything. Yes, they had all forgotten Mark was his childhood friend, how could he care any less about him. Tears were coming out of his eyes.

"But do you know what would have happened if he had been saved and she dead. He would have gotten up and THROWN HIMSELF OFF THE BLOODY ROOF.''

She could see that he was speaking from experience, he seemed tired and haggard.

"I will tell you everything, but please join that operation team," She just looked at his pleading face. His disheveled clothes indicative of his state of mind. She turned around and walked past him towards the main floor. She could hear the slumping to the ground and his hitched crying, never having expected the powerful and feared prosecutor, Mark Silver Smith to ball out like a child. Well, she never expected herself to cry too and even she had tears coming out of her eyes. Well, you got to know something new every day.
