Chapter 8: VIII. Ceremony
After finishing the skewers and throwing away the sticks, I see the church up ahead and make my way there.
The church, despite being called that, looks like a typical Japanese shrine. Complete with the torii gate entrance.
Giving my greetings to the priest currently sweeping the front, I make my way to the front entrance of the building.
After entering, I spot my mom speaking with what looks like the head priest.
Valister: "Hi, Mom, I've arrived. Hello, Head Priest-san."
I greet my Mom, and bow my head in greeting towards the Head Priest.
Head Priest: "Why hello there, young one. You must be Vellwood-chan's son. I am Head Priest Hondo Toriko. You can just call me Toriko-san."
Valister: "It is nice to meet Toriko-san. I hope you'll take care of me during the ceremony."
Toriko: "Oh ho ho! Such a polite boy. Don't worry this ceremony won't take too long. Lots of children like you are doing the ceremony today as well, after all."
Valister: "Yes, thank you very much."
The ceremony itself is pretty simple. It's kinda similar to a baptism, but without the water, just the praying part where the priest asks for blessing from Kami for a good future.
Toriko finishes up the 'baptism' with a hand wrapped in wooden prayer beads while patting each of my shoulders once, then clapping twice slowly in front of me, and clapping three times slowly towards the large main shrine behind, then a final bow twice.
Each of his practiced movement were filled with grace and sincerity.
He then hands me a document and congratulates me on becoming an official adult.
Toriko: "Congratulations, Vellwood Valister-san. You are now an adult in the all seeing eyes of Great Kami. Take this document to the government office to update your ID plate to prove your adulthood to the blind eyes of man."
If this Kami is Uncle, then he certainly can't see us now, as he's currently asleep. I won't tell him that though, that would be rude.
Valister: "Thank you very much, Toriko-san. I hope Kami-sama blesses your day."
I politely bowed and gave him a fitting goodbye.
Mom bows and thanks the priest for the ceremony, and we both make our way to the exit.
Daria: "Well, that wasn't so bad. It's still light out, so we have time to go to that place."
I look at her in confusion.
Valister: "What're you talking about? What place? A restaurant?"
Daria: "No, you silly boy. I swear, all you and your father think about is food. We're going to register you as an adventurer, sweetie."
Gasp! Really? I mean, I was planning to register anyways, but I was planning to do it tomorrow.
Valister: "But don't I have to take this document proving I'm now an adult to a government office first?"
Daria: "Don't worry, there's a small sub-office just two buildings away from the guild. We'll go there, since I have an acquaintance that can update your plate much faster than the main office building on Main Street."
Great then, we'll get things done today, and I can go on my first quest tomorrow!

We got things done in the small government building in a few minutes and are now walking through the doors of the Adventurer's Guild.
As soon as Mom walked in a lot of the adventurers inside greet her with smiles. Most of those that are greeting her being women, while some men look at her while smelling of a bit of lust mixed with fear. I guess she dealt with some of the rude male adventurers before. Knowing how much Mom loves Dad, and how strong she is, she probably busted some of their balls when they attempted to harass her. Mom's more popular than I thought.
I don't think I've mentioned this before, but my Mom is an A rank adventurer, being one of 50 in this city.
After Mom greets some of the women adventurers (while teasing me infront of them), we make our way to the counter handling people registering as adventurers.
You guessed it. The clerk is another pretty onee-san with humongous tits. She has long light brown hair tied to a loose braid over her left shoulder, black kind eyes with a mole under her left eye, and slightly pink lips.
I use my virgin powers, and initiate Bonk-no-Jutsu. No amount of cleavage will wake the monster in my pants wake up today.
Daria: "Hey, Rukia, how are things?"
Rukia: "Hi, Daria-chan! It's good to see you! I'm doing well, how about you?"
Daria: "Ah, it's been a slightly busy day. I had to help my son with his adult ceremony. Sweetie, this is Rukia, she handles registration for new adventurers. Rukia, this is my son, Valister."
I bow my head politely, and give my best genuine smile.
Valister: "Hello, Rukia-san, I am Vellwood Valister. You can just call me Val, if you want."
Rukia looks at me with a glint in her eyes.
There's that smell again. A very faint vanilla.
Rukia: "Ara Ara! My, what a handsome man! I wondered what Daria-chan's son looked like, but I didn't imagine him to be this good looking! My ex-fiance looks like a dead horse compared to your divine face!"
Oof.
I could smell slight anger when she mentioned her ex-fiance. Anger smells of smoke from a fire. What did he do to make her insult him so harshly. If he cheated, he must be medically retarded to do that to such a bombastic woman.
And she's right on the money with that 'divine face' compliment. I'm a demigod.
Daria: "Ho? Is an older woman like you aiming for my son? He likes women who can cook, by the way."
Rukia: "Hey, I'm only 23! I'm not old! Also, thank you very much for that information."
Why's my own mother trying to put on her older friend with her 15 year old son!?
Rukia looks at me as if she was predator looking at her prey. Her vanilla scent increases slightly.

Rukia: "Well, it's very nice to meet you, Val-kun, you can call me Rukia-neesan."
She then looks at me with a friendly smile, but I know under that seemingly innocent smile, a beast may slumber underneath.
I guess I'm just that irresistible.
I give an awkward smile
Valister: "Hehe... Can we move on, please, Rukia-neesan? I'd like to register as an adventurer."
Rukia: "Yes, right away. Do you have your ID plate? Also, the register fee is 80 ryō. You can waive the fee to pay later by docking a part of your pay from completed quest until you've paid the full amount."
Valister: "It's fine, I'll pay in full now."
I never liked paying later. Something probably happened in my past life to make me feel that way.
Rukia: "The amount has been confirmed. Thank you. Next, you must fill in this document, then I will issue you your new Adventurer ID."
Rukia hands me a one page document that includes name, birthday, place of birth, known skills, weapon of choice and known magic. I write down what's necessary.
(A/N: UPDATE: I took out race because of plot reasons.)
Daria: "Well, I think it's time for me to go back home. I need to ship for ingredients now to get it ready for dinner. Sweetie, I'll see you at home. Rukia..."
Mom winks at her friend. Rukia responds with a knowing smile, and her vanilla scent spikes up a little bit. I don't know what that means. They're probably communicating using their womanly powers. Mom leaves the guild without another word. I have mixed feeling about this.
I finish with the document and hand Rukia the paper. She thanks me, and heads to the back corner of the room. She comes back with a blank ID plate and a small rectangular metallic device and needle and cloth.
Rukia: "Please use this needle to drop a bit of blood onto this device, then use the cloth to clean the wound."
I do as she instructed and poke a bit of blood onto the device. Rukia then takes the device and puts it on top of the blank plate. I sense a bit of mana gather around the device then the blank plate goes *duum*. Rukia removes the device and my full name appeared on the plate, along with my adventurer rank, F, and my ID number. Cool, how does that odd device work?
Rukia then hands me the ID plate and informs me that if I loose it I must pay a 300 ryō fee for a replacement.
Rukia: "...And with that you are now an official adventurer! And I am officially done with my shift for today! This is a cause for celebration! Woohoo!"
I looked at her, a bit surprised at her sudden energy.
Valister: "Ah... um, woohoo?"
Rukia: "That's no good Val-kun! You must say it with more excitement!"
That's too embarrassing in a public place! Though I guess it's fine, since this place is kinda rowdy with all the adventurers going in and out.
Valister: "Ahem... Woohoo...!"
I say it slightly louder in an attempt to pacify the excited Rukia.
Rukia: "Mouu~ I'll guess that'll due. Ah, I know just the place to go to to celebrate and loosen up! Come with me!"
Rukia gives me no way out by grabbing my arm and taking me out of the guild.
At this point I'm just going with the flow.
Valister: "So... Where exactly are we going, Rukia-neesan?"
Rukia turns to me with a sly smile.
Rukia: "Of course, we're going to the best bar in town! Now that your an adult, we have to celebrate the adult way!"
I don't think I was much of a fan of drinking in my past life, but I won't say no to sharing a couple of drinks with a pretty woman.
We make our way to a bar named The Bee and the Bard. A sign besides the nameplate says 'Best Honey Wine in the Empire'. I'm not a much of a fan of sweets, but sweet tasting alcohol should taste good enough.
Rukia: "Here we are! Come on, come on!"
Rukia ushers me inside and we make our way to the counter and ask for a booth.
We are taken to a corner of the bar, and order some drinks from the menu. I order the honey wine, along with some meat side dishes, while Rukia orders a few rounds of the bar's strongest sake. So she's a drink hard after work type.
We make some small talk here and there.
The more time passes, the more empty bottles appear next to Rukia. I'm only on my third wine and I don't seem to be getting drunk anytime soon. Rukia on the other hand seems a little tipsy. She's used to this amount it seems.
She starts talking about her ex-fiance and how he cheated on a younger girl, her friend, and how she broke up the engagement and cut off her friend, then moved out of her town and into this city. As she's rambling on about how much of an asshole her ex is, she starts leaning on my shoulder while sobbing miserably.
...Oh, I know exactly how this is going, and I have absolutely no problem with it. I can smell her vanilla scent get stronger the more she cozies up to me.
Rukia: "Hey... Val-kun... have you ever had a girl?"
She asks me with a melancholic expression. She must be depressed from her previous break up.
Valister: "Um... No, I never had a girl."
I tried to answer back in a vague manner.
Rukia: "Do... you mind having an older girl as your first? Don't worry, it's not as if I'm asking you to go out with me... to be honest... I just want to vent my frustrations and stress."
Her vanilla scent grows further, and now the whole booth is filled with the scent.
...
I gotta help a woman in need. As a man, I gotta make the first move.
Valister: "I don't mind. In fact, I think having an experienced woman now could help me in the future."
I turn to Rukia, gently place my index and thumb fingers on her chin, and lift her face closer towards mine.
I whisper in her ear.
Valister: "I know a much more private place we can go to. To... release those frustrations..."
Suddenly the vanilla scent explodes and I'm almost overwhelmed.
Wow, so this is the scent of a fully horned up woman. Holy shit, it's intoxicating.
Rukia: "Well then. What are we waiting for. Let's go."
I smiled and grabbed her hand to leave. Rukia whilst still tipsy, didn't forget to pay for the drinks.
We then head to Amai Bathhouse.
