Alex eyed the salmon and reached for his water glass. 'I don't think,' he said, one adult to another, 'he was involved in selling the technology. He was critical of the way the government handled a lot of things, but not to the point of becoming a traitor.' His mother looked shocked. 'That's what they're called. But he wasn't one. The money laundering, I don't know. I don't know how long it had been going on. I'd say Donaldson was instrumental in introducing both, but how he managed it ...' He shook his head.

'They were in financial difficulty. Geoff said that father had told him a contract had been defaulted on. A company they had sent some very expensive equipment to had gone bankrupt and the equipment was seized along with other assets. They were never paid and had to resort to seeking an overdraft. Apparently the banks wouldn't help and that's when Nicholas Donaldson made his offer.'
