Chapter 13: Chapter 13: A promise is extracted

He too sipped his drink. 'I don't think I can help. Alex wasn't a gambler, he played cards - if you see the difference. I don't understand what your husband would have meant by him not being the type they wanted in the company. As I said on the phone, we met at Harvard. He was doing a Masters in business. Someone brought him to a Friday night poker game and he kept coming. He was good. I remember him telling me cards got him into trouble when he was younger and his father had to bail him out with the school he was attending. By the time I met him he kept the two well and truly separate, except inasmuch as he invested his winnings and those earnings helped him live while he was studying.'

'What did he invest in?'

'A couple of businesses. One I remember was a friend who typed assignments and that sort of thing for students. He set her up with the latest equipment, formulated a business plan and before she knew where she was she was employing three people and making a real living.'
