Chapter 25: Morning Lectures

The morning starts with a wracking cough, Michael shouts, "Goddammit." He immediately ran to the bathroom before he spits out a clot of blood. He wipes his mouth off with water, "I think that was the last one." He said to himself as he wipes his face off with a towel.

He shakes his head as he lazily went back to his bed, closing his eyes, trying to rest for the hectic day ahead. Unfortunately for him, fate had other plans. He felt the ringing in his head, one which he answers then a shout echoes through his head, "Sir Michael!".

The voice filled with worry makes him open his eyes. He sees both Madelaine and Mary's worried expressions. A fact which makes him smile, he then drowsily replies, "Hey, I'm back." Madelaine exclaims, "Are you all right? You seem pale."

Michel sheepishly rubs the back of his head, "Not really, I feel like shit." He rests his head on the pillow, Mary frets at his answer and shouted, "W-what happened?" Michael spins, "I just overused my magic." Madelaine and Mary looked at him in confusion, Michael sees their reaction and sighs, "Right, I guess there isn't a better time than this."

Michael sits back up, "So, have you memorized and finished the runes I gave you?" The two of them nodded. Michael then snaps his fingers as a screen appears between them, they both gasp in shock as a blank screen appears on their screen.

"Before you start performing magic, you have to understand how it works." The screen then shows a human body and a block of stone. "First of all, the thing that's powering all of our magic is called mana."

"It flows from the atmosphere," The screen changes as a blue substance seemingly fill the body's veins coming from the outside, Michael continues, "The mana can be distributed to your conduits, to perform the magic you wrote in it. You touch it to make a connection." The screen shows a connection between the body and the block of rock.

Michael coughs up blood on the napkin he took out, worrying the two girls. He waves their concern away as he continued, "The mana the conduit can take, only depends on its material and its size." He coughs a bit as his airways clear, the two intently listening, "So a big rock can only do so much before it breaks upon something a gold could easily handle."

"The problem comes from the body," The screen zoom in the body, "There can only be so much mana the can flow through the body before it breaks." He breathes deeply as the screen shows blood, "If, by chance, you bypass the mana your body can take. It will result in internal bleeding and a bit of bruising here and there."

The description makes the two blanch as they look at him, inspecting his complexion and checking for bruises. Michael only dismisses their worry with a wave, "I'm already alright," He smiles at them both as he raises his hand to them, "The bracelet I have, has a regeneration magic."

The sentence did not do its intended effect, "You used magic!?" The two shout in worry, making Michael recoil as he raises his arm in surrender, "I-its fine though." He placatingly smiles before continuing, "The same way there is an upper limit, there's a lower limit."

They stop before they can shout at him, hearing this, Michael continued, "If you remain at the lower limit, your body remains untouched." Michael smiles, "It just so happens that the lower limit was more than enough to heal my injuries."

The two sigh in relief, making Michael smile, thinking he was already in the clear. Madelaine then shouts from her bedroom "But that doesn't mean it's alright to get your body injured." Mary follows up, "What kind of magic did you even perform, for you to cough up blood!?"

Michael looks away, willing the screens out of his view as he mutters, "I kind of got carried away and performed large scale magic." Mary replied with confusion written in her expression as Michael pull the screen back to view, "How big of a scale?"

Micahel scratches his cheek in embarrassment as he mutters, "About a kilometer." Madelaine shouts in shock, "A Kilometer!? a KILOMETER!?" Michael looks down in guilt, as Madelaine shouts, "What in gods name were you thinking? did you just want to die!?" She sighs as she gestures to him "Look, I admit I'm new to this magic stuff. But I'm sure whatever it was a kilometre was too big of a scale."

Michael laughs a bit, "I just really wanted to see how big my capacity was and" Michael fidgets as Mary glares at him forcefully spoke, "And!?" Michael hurriedly said, "I wanted to impress them in accepting my offer." Mary looks to him like he was a child, something Michael was more than ready to admit. 'That was pretty impulsive of me, I did kind of showed off.'

Madelaine sighs in exasperation before speaking, "It's fine, was it at least worth the trouble?' Michael nods fervently as he spoke, "Yeah, it was. I had to do some pretty good acting as well." Madelaine giggles at his smug expression, feeling at ease from his returning complexion.

Mary shakes her head in exasperation before she spoke, "So, what did you gain from this?" Michael smiles before replying, "An army of outlaws and rebels." Madelaine raises an eyebrow in question, "I thought you'll have Mary make you an army." Mary nods in agreement.

Michael grins, "Mary's mercenary company will be used for later. A special force designed for quick and precise strikes." He grins, "Those men will be the backbone of my army, the rallying cry in Rosalian Kingdom designed to be the first step in my plans."

Michael shrugs, "Then, them being outlaws and all, makes it all the better. After all, there are just some things you can't do legally." Mary and Madelaine nod in understanding, Madelaine then sternly smiles, "So how much of our income do we divert to them? How much money would we use to subsidize them?"

Michael's smile stiffens before a knock comes from the door, Albert spoke "Sir Michael, are you ready to go?" Michael stands up as he quickly waves goodbye to both Mary and Madelaine, "Haha, looks like I'm out of time."

Michael chose to ignore Madelaine's glare and Mary's amused expression. Knowing that maybe, just maybe, he has little to no knowledge of the current finances. He then hurriedly spoke, "I'll be going to my meeting with the First Prince. So, let's talk about it next time." Mary waves goodbye with a smile while Madelaine huffs her goodbye, a bit disgruntled. Michael smiles and says his goodbye before closing the screen and then mutters to himself in realization.

"Huh, the cough's gone."
