Chapter 3: Loss of a Father Pt.2 (EDITED)

Matthew POV

I ask my brother for the letter so I can read it, I look at the contents, not really interested in what he was writing about, just about how much he lied to us, not that I would be able to see whether or whether not he was lying... I don't know much of this war, and most people don't want to since ignorance is bliss.

Matthew POV

I just managed to get to the library, getting the records from the Archives of Wars was difficult for a 14 year old, since most people don't want kids to know what its like, because most of them don't as well, but I think the most challenging part was to get them to take me seriously.

Well, I got the books I needed, I think.

They don't really specify quite well what is what about, I mean, even before reading this, I now firmly believe we're losing, I mean just look at our organization & categorization of Military Archives!

Its a mess!

Ok, I think I have the gist of it, this is a defensive war is in between us, the Season Cluster, and them, the United Industrial Nations of the North.

The archives get a little obscure on the topic of why we do this war aside from the most common war reasons, resources and land for the people.

The information from the United Industrial Nations of the North [My fingers hurt, I'm gonna use UINN from now on] is also pretty scarce, probably from the enemy counterintelligence blocking out our intelligence, not to mention that we've barely seen their trenches, so there is no chance that we've seen their peoples and government.

Also it says for our people that the war is starting to have a negative effect on manpower, meaning that the Counsel of 99 are planning to sign a bill stating that any criminal or court marshaled soldier may choose 2 choices, death or joining a new branch of the army, called, 'Penal Companies.'

These 'Companies' would probably be in the worst grade of gear, food, etc. though. To leave these companies you have to get a medal or a pardon from the commander of the battalion, making it practically impossible for the people in these Companies to ever leave... ingenious, if you look from a manpower standard, as well as a motivational standard

As I stand in front of a podium wearing this hat that's given to the 'Best Students' or 'Valedictorians' wearing my best clothes, and I'm supposed to give a speech of how much our country is prospering when after pouring over all the archives available, its clearly not the truth, and I don't like saying the truth.

Of course, I would never say anything to my teacher, well actually... I wouldn't say anything at all, so I just shake my head and try to motion to them that I can't speak, which they already know, I mean I have been with them with roughly 2 years.

Anyways, I sit down and see that my English teacher comes onto the stage, clears her throat and begins to praise the country that we are in, quickly drifting off, I begin wondering how the landscape and people are in the UINN, probably not too different from us...

Well that speech was short, I couldn't imagine how the people would look like, how the weather would be like, or even how they may dress, oh well, I guess I can always try to look a little deeper.

As I walk into school for I see people looking at me strangely, but the oddest was yet to come, once I went into the classroom a shady looking man asks me, "Are you perhaps Alex's younger brother?"

I see no point in lying so I simply nod, he then gets on the ground and bows to my surprise, he then hands me a small stack of money and says, "We are sorry for the late payment! We had some issues from our side! This should also cover the interest, please don't punish us!"

I raise my eyebrow wondering what my brother did this time...

After some time, I guess he's doing shady business, what kind? Don't know, don't care, won't ask, cause one, I still want to look at him as the coolest dude in the world, two, its none of my business, at least I won't be beat anymore, that's for sure, and three, how else will we pay the bills? I mean, the army doesn't give anymore money, and even back then, it certainly wasn't enough.

I go to the lunchroom, its nice that at least the noise of chatter is deafens the war, its a nice accidental bonus.

Matthew POV

Everyone treated me with respect, and I also got quite a sum of cash... more than enough for our family, I wonder where the rest goes?

Not my problem, I enter our house to see my brother at the dinner table.

He asks me my opinions of what he does and I just shrug and write that I really don't care, I mean how else will we live where we do? I mean without joining the military of course, and even then, once that person dies, they won't pay us anymore.

My brother smiles and leaves, seeing that I understand that what he does he does for us.
