Chapter 58
Title: Doflamingo vs Max
…
Doflamingo shot out long strings from each of his fingers, trapping Max in a deadly cage that he would have to try and block. Yet both knew that would lead to injuries for the Bear Devil Fruit user.
Instead, Max's body thinned and moved in an inappropriately strange way that wouldn't be possible.

Doflamingo recognized the technique as one of the Rokushiki six. "Hehehehe, are you with Cipher Pol?"
Max moved at incredible speeds and charged at the man, his axe was covered in Armament Haki, and ready to bisect anyone.
*Clang!*
But the attack was stopped midway my strings and Doflamingo's fingers twitched. "You must be Bear D. Max, I heard quite a lot about you."
Max didn't answer and just shot a small metal ball at Doflamingo's forehead. The attack was sliced in two by a barely visible string before it even hit its target. After he confirmed that this was the real Doflamingo, Max then pressed a small button on the Transponder Snail in his pocket. This would send a signal to Raynare and she would know what to do next.
"Man, you should at least say something. It makes this battle less boring." The Warlord snickered. But Max didn't fall for his remarks and just attacked with his big axe, trying to cut the strings, but was unsuccessful in his endeavor.
"This is troublesome," Max complained. "Those strings are impossible to break through as with my current power."
Even in his Zoan form, his strength was inadequate to even touch Doflamingo. Also, he had to keep his form lean and concentrate on speed if he didn't want to get hit by Doffy's dangerous attacks. This was a battle where even one injury could be disastrous.
In the battle with Luffy, both Doflamingo and the Strawhat bash each other across buildings and the ground. But this time it was different because whoever hit the seafloor was a dead man.
Both Max and Doflamingo were Devil Fruit users, so this battle for the Bear Devil Fruit user wasn't one where he necessarily needed to defeat his opponent with raw strength. So he could afford to lose the battle but win the war.
Still, though, Max knew that his opponent wasn't stupid and would have the same thoughts in mind.
So they clashed once more, this time Max had a slight advantage and was able to push back the strings a little.
{Overheat}
Suddenly a blast of hot condensed strings came towards Max, he attempted to dodge but in that instant his body got restricted by strings. It was enough to hold him back from being able to move around.
So the heated string passed right through his midsection. The pain was unbearable as he felt the blood in his body boiling, he saw who had made the attack and it was a clone made of string. It also was wet, showing that it had come from underwater.
"Hehehe~ that gotta hurt~" said Doflamingo in a sing-song tone. "It feels like your organs are being cooked like a steak. Do you like your meat medium-rare or well done?"
Max sighed, his body slumped down, and he looked at the sky. His face had gone pale due to the injury and pain. "Damn, this sucks so hard. You're stronger than me, Doflamingo. I will need to train 10x harder to be able to beat you."
"Well, at least you are confident even on your deathbed." Doffy complimented him, before sending a barrage of strings to decapitate his opponent.
Max sighed and crunched down on the three Rumble Balls that he always kept inside his mouth during a battle. There was a reason why he usually didn't talk a lot in battle, after all, if one of those fell out of his mouth mid-battle because he talked a lot. It would be a silly way to lose a battle and die.
He felt his insides churn and just his muscles alone snapped the overheated string inside of him and spewed it out. The fresh wound closed by itself and the bleeding stopped. Max's body got bigger and bigger till it completely overshadowed Doflamingo.
His mind felt like it got overshadowed by an even bigger instinct. Max felt that after he would bash in Doffy, he could just eat the man, bite off his arms and devour them. If he gave in to the Beast, then everything would be fixed for him.
But as soon as those thoughts came to mind, they were swiped off. As if he would let some animal take care of his problems, in his eyes that would be the same as asking a dog to do your homework. It was a recipe for disaster, only a mad man would think it would work. The first thing that would happen is that the Beast mindset wouldn't be able to even use <Geppo> and Max would plummet to the sea. Saving Doflamingo the trouble of killing him.
'I am Tank!' Max yelled out in his mind. It was a weird thought that came out of nowhere. But he couldn't help but think of the RPG games he used to play in his 1st life. Going by RPG standards, he would be a Tank that can hit hard and dodge. Such a random thought, yet it was able to keep him sane. 'I order my body! Not the other way around!'
Doflamingo at the same time didn't wait for Max and attacked him with full power. The strings sent to cut him though only bounced off his tough skin and the strings restraining him were broken. Max covered his whole body with Armament Haki, in his current state of mind the usually good Observation Haki that he had wasn't accessible. He could barely even sense his enemy now.
But that didn't matter, as his body seemed like a black bear and he opened his mouth.
*ROAR!!*
Max roared like an animal, the sound was so loud that even Doflamingo winced. He couldn't block a sound attack, and the sea below them which was calm suddenly started churning and dead fish appeared on the surface of the water.
Unconsciously Max was also releasing Conqueror's Haki, he was in a strange state of control over his body. But at the same time, his instinctual self was still there, rampaging about.
Doflamingo prepared <Overheat> and shot it at Max.
Fwosh!
But he disappeared before the attack hit. Doflamingo looked at this with shock. 'He disappeared?! With such a big body?!'
But before he could react Max was right to Doffy's side, punching towards the man with all the raw strength he could muster. Doflamingo knew that attack would break any limb it came in contact with.
So with that in mind, he extended out his palm towards Max, and strings sprouted out.
{Spider's Web}
Doflamingo created a huge web made of string that would protect him from the incoming attack.
But Max wasn't discouraged at this, his beer-like face instead had a giant smile in it.
BAAAAAAM!!
The punch only pushed Doflamingo backward a little, but the attack wasn't able to break through the string defense. Though he should be celebrating, Doffy felt something was weird about the attack. Also, Max still had a smirk on his face.
<Six King Guns>
That was it, the moment that everything fell into place and Doflamingo felt his insides churn as a blast of air came out of Max's fist and hit him directly. It ignored all defenses and attacked internally.
*cough* Doflamingo spit out some blood and immediately started internal self-surgery and his organs started mending by themselves as string stitched the wounds shut.
Max on the other hand had a smirk on his face. Due to using the Rumble Ball he has entered Awakening forcefully. "C'mon now, Doffy, I can keep this up for hours."
After saying that a dozen powerful punches rained down on the string defense that was shaped like a spider's web. And one of Doflamingo's strongest defenses broke down, and Max charged in like an animal out for blood.
'I just need to hold out some more and in the end, I will win this fight.' Doflamingo thought, gathering his power and getting ready to fight once more.

A/N: Max might not be a talented Swordsman, nor does he have a heritage of monsters. But if there is one thing he had and that was his calm mind, even Garp complimented Max that he would be perfect for Observation Haki, due to his calm demeanor.
Six King Gun - a technique that only those who have mastered the Rokushiki techniques. Used by Lucci against Luffy in their final showdown.
P.S: Doflamingo in this fight is in better shape than when he fought against Gear 4 Luffy since by then he had taken a huge injury due to Law's attack already.
