Chapter 572: Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 337. Too Old For The Journey

Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 337. Too Old For The Journey

The days that followed were filled with duty and responsibility for both Rose and Angel. Their lives were filled with the kingdom's needs, and every hour seemed consumed by meetings, decisions, and their roles. But even amidst the demands of ruling, there was a subtle shift between them. Their relationship grew closer, not with grand gestures or overt declarations of love, but in quieter, more meaningful ways.

Angel had started to open up to Rose, though it was a gradual process. He was still the man who kept his emotions guarded, his thoughts carefully measured, but little by little, she noticed the change.

He sought her counsel more often and allowed himself to be more present with her. It wasn't easy for him—Rose could tell. Each phase of openness felt like he was testing unfamiliar waters, as if unsure of how far he could go without losing control.

Rose cherished these small shifts, knowing that for Angel, they were monumental. But despite their deepening bond, there was something that lingered between them—a distance that hadn't been there before. It was subtle, but Rose could feel it. Angel was hesitant to touch her, to initiate any intimacy like they had shared on that first night. His kisses, though still filled with affection, lacked the urgency they once had. His hands, when they found her, seemed careful, almost tentative.

It made Rose restless. She knew Angel too well to dismiss this change as simple fatigue from his duties. There was something else. Something deeper.

She suspected it had to do with the vision he had seen through the bracelet, the one that had unsettled him so much. The mysterious girl, the shadow, the cryptic words that had haunted him—all of it had left a mark on him, one that Rose could sense in every interaction. It was as if Angel was now seeking reassurance, not just from the world around him, but from her. He needed to know that she was still by his side, even as he grappled with the unknown.

The other thing was the expert Rose had mentioned, someone who might have the knowledge to decipher the bracelet's meaning and provide insight into the mysterious references in the Rose family's ancient texts. Angel had immediately sent a formal letter, inviting the man to the castle with honors. He had hoped the scholar, despite his age, would come.

But the reply had arrived only a few days ago, carried by a courier. It had been written by the old man's son, explaining that his father was too frail to make the long journey to the castle. The letter had been polite, respectful, but firm—the elderly scholar could no longer travel, as his hands were too weak, his body too weary.

'Too old for the journey…' It was an understandable reason, of course, but that didn't lessen the disappointment. The man had been Angel's best hope for understanding the strange bracelet and the cryptic references in the book that no one else could interpret. And now, that avenue seemed closed, at least temporarily.

But Angel wasn't the type to simply give up because of an obstacle. The scholar might not be able to come to the castle, but that didn't mean Angel couldn't go to him. As soon as he read the letter, Angel had made his decision: he would visit the man himself. A letter had already been sent, informing the scholar's family that the king of Euphorion would personally make the journey to see him.

Despite his ability to use his teleportation skill, Angel had decided to wait. There were formalities to be observed, after all. A king arriving unannounced, even with the best of intentions, could cause more trouble than it was worth. He would give it a few days, at least until his letter reached them.

Still, the wait gnawed at him. Angel wasn't used to waiting. He preferred to act, to solve problems as quickly and efficiently as possible. But this was different. The unknown, the cryptic nature of everything he had uncovered, felt like a puzzle with too many missing pieces. The bracelet, the shadow, the messages—all of it seemed connected, but he couldn't see how.
