Chapter 16: Chapter 18

The door bell jingles, to signal that someone is coming into the building. We look up from our current task of packaging the cookies on the counter. Joy says with a sigh, and her lip turning lopsided, "Your boy toy is here."

Oren then says, "Oh, the boy toy you wished you had." She gives him a side glance, "Oh, baby girl don't be upset, he's just someone you wished you had— on top of you." He laughs, and a small chuckle escapes from my lips. I turn around to face Lucas, he says with a beaming smile "Hey, beautiful you have a little time to eat some food."

I look at the time on the clock on the wall in the kitchen. "Oh shit." Joy turns to look at me, "Whoops— not— it's all good, besides most of the customers are on the other side of the store." She rolls her eyes at me and turns to walk into the kitchen. I stick my tongue out a little and Oren laughs. A small chuckle escapes from his lips, "So you got a minute or are we gonna reschedule?" My eyes move to the side and I look up at him with a scrunched up face, "Mhmm, how about this Saturday in the evening me and you. I'm sorry I made this arrangement with you only to waste your time coming here." Lucas does a side glance, 'Oh my gosh he must be so upset with me.' My stomach is churning on the inside. In a moment he looks back up at me, "It's sad, but okay. You better make sure you have a clear schedule for the evening and I'll do the same thing." I nod my head.

Joy pokes her head out from the kitchen and she says, "Kemi, I should hope that you still want to be working here, yes?"

Just as I was about to respond to her, Oren steps in, turning around to face her saying, "Then perhaps you need some dick, which is nonexistent in your life." A loud gasp escapes from her mouth, she goes back to minding her own business and he turns back around to face me and winks at me. That Oren may be a perv, but he's a good guy and means well.

"Well I guess for my troubles…" his voice trails off as he takes a step back from the cake case and looks at all the small delectable cakes we have. "I think I'm going to go with the chocolate mousse."

"Okay, do you want the large size or the personal one?"

"I'll take the personal, unfortunately there isn't anyone to share the large size with."

A small smile graces my face, "Okay nice come back, Mr. Spelling." I step back to grab the cake with my gloved hand and Oren walks up to me with the price tag on the container and I place the chocolate mousse inside the container. Oren took it in his hand and I said, "Because I know you, I can't ring you up myself, but Oren here will take care of your order for you."

As Oren is working on ringing him up, I worked on packaging the rest of the cookies on the table. I hear Oren say to him, "Yo, I see the way she looks at you and it's a look I haven't seen on her in a long time. Don't fuck this up, she's like a big sister to me, so don't break her heart." No, lie I have to say when he said that, it made me happy that Oren cared so much about me. He truly is a down friend, I'm thankful for that, but I don't think that Lucas isn't going to hurt me— never say never I think to myself. Lucas nods his head as he was looking at me, and he takes quick strides to stand in front of the cake case. I turned around to face him and he said, "I'll call you later after you've worked your shift."

A small smile graces my face, "All right, after work sounds good enough to me. You get home safely."

Lucas nods his head, "Yeah, you too. Also make sure to call me as soon as you get home."

"Okay Mom." I said in a flirty voice while a small smile graced my face. He walks out and I continue to work on the cookies on the table. Five o'clock approaches rather quickly, taking my break moments two and half hours before I leave from work.

As I'm on my way home from work, I can hear impending footsteps behind. Suddenly a strong arm pulls me to turn around to face a hooded person. My heart slightly falls into my chest and I thrust my palm in the air to hit the person in the face, they catch my arm to stop my assault. My eyebrows furrow, and the person removed their hoody and my eyes grow big when I see Quinton. Lips made into a paper thin line, "Are you kidding me? Do I need to get a restraining order on your ass?"

He takes a step towards me, " No, you won't have to do that. Look, please tell your friend to stop this investigation. I really can't go to prison please, if I go they're going to kill me in there."

A small chuckle escapes from my lips, a sense of glee in my voice "When you were killing your brother or better yet battering Aimee in the bathroom and they asked for you to stop, did you stop?"

A gasp escapes from his mouth, he then says pleading "Listen, I promise to leave you alone, I won't come near you ever again. I won't even talk about Aquila and any of my other victims, anything but going to jail. PLEASE."

I chortled, "You know, it's funny how you get exactly what's coming to you. Karma could be such a bitch, just in case you haven't noticed. By the way, perhaps you now know what it means to fear, stop groveling. It's not a good look for you."

I turn away from him and just as I continue to keep on walking he says, "That day, definitely killed the wrong person, at least we both wouldn't have you in our lives. I wouldn't be at your mercy crouching like this in front of you like this. Even I have my pride and you just trampled all over it as if it was the very dirt you walk on."

Turning around to face him, "No, you did that to yourself. Especially when I know that you won't stop— you don't have a care in the world for human life and/ or existence. All you care about is yourself, you have no regard for the others around you."

Quinton grunts, "You can't judge me. I can change, you may not know that but I'm quite well aware of myself."

I chuckle, "Please don't make me laugh. I'd rather not deal with this anymore. You're going to finally understand what it means to be hunted, and you're going to take your punishment like a man and you're going to know what fear really means. You're finally getting what you give to other people." I walked away from him, but this time when I did, it was with a sense of finality. Even if he wanted to stop me one more time to make his argument he couldn't stop me because at that point even he realized that I have no intention to help him.

I feel my phone ringing, reaching my hand into my bag to get it. Looking at my phone at the caller ID, sliding my finger across the screen saying, "Hello?"

"Is this Kemille Wright?"

I pause in the street, "Yes? Who is this?"

"This is Dr. Hailey North from Saint Barnabas hospital in Livingston, NJ. I'm calling about your sister, Fei Chan."

The hospital— Fei Chan is in the hospital— everything felt so foreign to me— so unknown— all of it is so strange. Who would want to hurt her? All of these things and questions are rolling through my mind like wildfire. Where— Where is she? Right, finally finding my voice, "Well, why is she so far away then? What was she doing there? Are the police there?" I said in one voice and one breath.

"Okay Miss, why don't you get here and I'll answer every single question until you get here. I'll make sure to let the front desk know to let you upstairs."

"Okay." I immediately hung up the phone and opened up the Uber app to get a ride to St. Barnabas Hospital.
