Ch8.Dursleys

Panic came upon Petunia Dursley (née Evans) when she saw her nephew go crashing down; after all, she just struck him with the pan. That too on the head.

The boy was just lying there on the floor.

"This was not supposed to happen!" she kept on muttering herself. The freak should have gotten up after he got hit; that was what was supposed to happen. Not just lay there on the kitchen floor. The boy wasn't moving at all.

She rushed forward to check on him. The boy was breathing faintly, if anything. She pushed the child onto his side and tilted his head back like she was supposed to. Now, should she call 999?

Her first thought was to do it, yet she did not. This could ruin everything for her family if this incident gets out. Petunia then went to close the net curtains. She prayed no one saw what happened here, especially Mrs. Next Door, as she must be still home now.

She sprinkled some water on Harry's face. The boy still did not wake up. Petunia's thin face paled as time went by.

She kept looking at the boy every few minutes for any sign of change. The boy looked so much like his weird father, James Potter. His eye's though, reminded her of one person—one person only...Lily. She normally pretended she didn't have any sister; it was easier like that. Yet she had a younger one.

The boy's mere existence gave Petunia a constant reminder of her perfect little sister and the world she herself had been excluded from.

She hated her sister; she hated anything to do with her sister's world. Her parents always favoured Lily over her, but for my mother and father, oh no, it was Lily this and Lily that; they were proud of having a witch in the family!

She was the only one who saw Lily for what she was—a freak! The boy was likely a freak as well, unlike her sweet Dudley. She noticed sometimes how peculiar things happen if the boy was upset.

She obviously chose not to inform the boy about his weird abilities, and Vernon was more than happy to agree as well. She was quite happy, and Vernon too hated anything unusual or out of the ordinary.

After all, she didn't want the freak to hurt her family. She knew magic could be used to hurt normal people. She had known that for a long time.

She would be damned before she let freaks hurt her family. But what was she to do with the boy?

Should she wait for Vernon to come back home? What if her baby angel woke soon and found the freak? No. The freak would probably scare her, darling. Better to put the boy back in his cupboard...

Petunia placed the kid back in his bed. The boy was quite small. Still, it left Petunia out of breath. Would the boy not wake up again? That thought seemed to rather scare her.

Good thing the school is closed for the kids, she thought. She didn't know how long they could hide the boy.

As time went on, Her mind was preoccupied with thinking about the consequences of her actions. She never really meant to hurt the boy. Just teach the freak a lesson to never burn the bacon again. Petunia knew she was in the wrong, yet she knew she would never admit it.

What if the police got involved? They would be ridiculed by everyone! Their perfect life would be shattered forever. It's all thanks to the freak again! No, she was not going to let that happen to her family. If anyone asked what happened to the boy. The boy fell down the stairs and hurt himself... yes thats what happened after all. The boy was just careless after all.

She was the perfect housewife. They were a perfectly normal couple. Everyone would, of course, believe them.

Vernon drove home from work in his Chevette as usual. He was tired after his long day at work. Ordering around his employees at Grunning's seemed to get more tiring as the years went by.

"Petunia, dear, I am home!" He called loudly out to his wife; she might be upstairs. As he got into their home, thinking about getting some more new deals for the drills, he walked past the hallway.

He noticed something quite strange. Did Petunia just come out of the cupboard under the stairs? Why does she look so pale?

"Are you alright, Petunia? he asked, worried.

Petunia looked more distraught. She suddenly burst into tears. Now he was really worried. When Vernon finally managed to calm her, she told him everything that had happened.

Vernon then visited Harry in his cupboard. The boy was still unconscious. This was quite bad, as, from what Petunia said, the boy had lost consciousness for some time now. The boy seems to be in some sort of pain. Should they take him to the emergency? No... Questions may be asked about the boy that he was not comfortable answering.

Vernon came out of the cupboard and asked something to Petunia that genuinely surprised her: "Do you think the freaks watch the boy?"

"No, I don't think they checked on the boy. We had never seen their kind before. From what I know, they only come around if the boy shows their freakishness when he is 11–12 years old. I don't think we have to worry about them now," said Petunia

The Dursleys both shuddered to think what the neighbours would say if the freaks actually paid them a visit.

"What should we do about the boy?" Petunia asked worrisomely.

"Don't worry about him, Petunia, the boy will be fine when he wakes up. For all we know, the boy might be playing us. The boy may have needed a good beating to cure his freakishness after all," said Vernon.

Later that day, Vernon locked the cupboard in case Dudley came across his cousin accidentally. There is no need to scare the little tyke after all.

Then the Dursleys went about their day, ignoring their charge like they were used to for years now. They knew deep down that what they were doing was wrong on so many levels. Yet they didn't care enough about the boy to get him proper healthcare.

The Dursleys obviously cared more about what others said about them than the welfare of the nephew in their care.

In that dark little cupboard under the stairs unknown to all, even the wise headmaster in a faraway castle in Scotland. The battle still raged on for Harry Potter..
