Chapter 53: Lava Lake
Time for initial contact. If I die tell my loved ones I loved them. Also, tell my hated ones I hated them. Tell everyone else that I'm mostly indifferent to their existence.
Quick guideline, anyone that can't take a joke goes in hated. Same for anyone being annoying in a public space. Extra hate for unruly children and unruly adults haha.
If I could, I would take life insurance right about now. Could pay off really quick. I can picture the disbelieving expression of a potential salesman. One that would say stuff like: What? You want to put a tree as beneficiary?! Are you insane?!
Then I could start a long monologue about how pure our friendship is. Maybe sing it if I feel like a princess. Is it bad when your best friend is a tree? Asking for a friend haha. Of course, I am not trying to get myself killed. It's just that long term I don't see myself surviving here. At all.
This creature could be my way out. I slowly approach it. It is peering at me. No movement or noise of any kind, simply observing with lava dripping off its body, just standing there on all four. Dripping on all four…that would be a good title for…
[Hey there! Can you understand me?]
I can feel some curiosity from it. How is it possible? I have no clue. Then again maybe it is wondering if I taste good. For all I know the creature is determining at this moment if I am edible.
[Do you know any dwarf?]
No answer. This is going to be hard.
[Do you know Yggdrasil?]
Ah! It reacted to the name.
[Yggdrasil?]
Once more! Okay, this creature is probably somehow related to my friend. Could it be a guardian too? No, I doubt it. They did say something about only there being 3 guardians in the forest currently.
While this may not be the forest itself, it is linked. If it is not a guardian could it be a being similar to the bear? One that just happens to live here. Maybe it just happens to know about my friend. That could very well be possible.
[Yggdrasil! What is your relationship to him?]
It just keeps looking at me. Then it turns around. It takes a few steps, then stops. It looks back towards me.
What does it want? It backtracks in front of me. Then goes away again. Seemingly wanting me to follow. This is weird.
[Do you want me to follow you?]
It doesn't seem to understand me. I take a step in its direction. It resumes walking. It is heading toward the pond. I really hope it's not playing dumb to get me near its territory.
I do not sense any malice from it, however. At all. It seems extremely pure to me. Well, 100% light eyes may help for that. It enters the lava. Okay, what now? Why did it even bring me here?
That's when it happens. The lava slowly starts parting. A narrow stone path appears. One that leads to an opening. A tunnel that was previously hidden in the lava.
The creature is on the side seemingly happily swimming. This feels surreal. The glowing liquid forms a wall on each side. Nothing seems to be spilling. It wants me to follow it there. Oh god. This is madness.
What happens if it suddenly falls back on me? I'd die instantly. No time to even react. There is no way going in there is a good idea. Then again, the old ghost sent me here. It shouldn't be dangerous in theory.
He did seriously teach me… Actually, what if he only tortured me because he was bored? What if his plan all along was to kill me for fun? What if… Ah, but Yggdrasil would get mad for sure.
This probably isn't something anyone sane would do. Should I trust this creature or not? It seems to be confused as to why I am still on the side. It is either everything works out…or I die.
At least the ending should be fast. I don't know. What if… Fuck it! I'll give it a try. There is always the possibility that this is a test of courage. Either that or I will be a good Darwin award candidate.
Here goes nothing. I carefully tread the path. On both sides, death. My goal is the tunnel. I carefully move a step after the other. Making sure I don't fall. Until finally I do reach the objective.
Just as I'm about to sigh in relief I see something happen. If I had a personal narrator for my life he would be going: It was at this very moment that he knew he fucked up. Big time!
I watch helplessly as the lava collapses toward my position. In but a second I will be fully submerged. Fire is my weakness, I think. Goodbye world.
Sorry Yggdrasil, it seems I failed you. Sorry, my disciples. May you guys remain strong. Sorry spider. Especially about the whole dispelling clothing thing. I do not regret it at all, however.
If I can reincarnate, I will make sure I annihilate that old ghost. Sadly, what are the chances of it happening twice in a row? Incredibly low I am guessing. I close my eyes as I feel the heat.
Even though my eyelids, I can see the resplendent and warm glow. I am leaving this world in a blaze! There may not be much glory but still.
And thus I get engulfed and… ...Or not. I slowly open my eyes. The tunnel is still fiery-death free. I'm alive! I'm still alive!!! Ah….
Good thing no one saw or heard about that. Could you imagine if I had a way to communicate with people? Me sending mass messages reading: I am dead, take care and live a good life. How embarrassing it would have been to tell them that I'm actually alive.
Either I could have spun that as a really bad prank and seem like an asshole.
Or I could have told them about the real situation and seem like a dumbass.
It was just me freaking out for nothing. All good. Well, guess I'll follow the tunnel.
Either way, there is no going back.
