Forever and always chapter 1

CHAPTER 1

"Don't worry sis," Carter said, trying to reassure her, "forever and always, remember?" That had become their "thing" years ago when their parents had gotten divorced. At first, they had been separated, Carter staying with his mother and Cateline going with her father. Then, their father had lost the privilege of seeing them. They had lived at their mother's house ever since. Though, she didn't exactly feel like a mother, at least not anymore. Not since she had ruined their lives forever, all just because she was selfish and only cared for herself. Cateline gave him a watery smile.

"I'm gonna miss you, Carter," Cateline said, her voice cracking, "Forever and always." They were being separated again. Carter was going to Chula Vista, California, while Cateline was going to San Diego, California. Yes, they weren't too far apart, but there was no way to visit the other where they were going.

Carter and Cateline are twins. They are both 16 years old and live with their mother. Carter has blond hair and blue eyes, while Cateline has blond hair and gray eyes. Cateline 's hair reaches down to her waist, and Carter's hair is cut short and thin on the top of his head. Carter is 6 ft. 2in. and Cateline is 5ft 6in. They live in Washington D.C. in an apartment complex on New Hampshire Ave. Did they miss their father? Indeed. He had always been good to them. He had truly been a parental figure, unlike their mother who only cared for her well-being. She was willing to do practically anything for money. Why their father had lost his privileges to see them? They did not know for their mother would not tell them. Now, back to the story….

It all started on a stormy Wednesday morning, Carter and Cateline 's 16th birthday, and it wasn't going exactly as planned… "Annie! When will you stop being such a baby and wake up! You can't just hide in your room forever. " Carter exclaimed. Yelling through the door.

Cateline had been hiding in her room with her nose in a book all day. That, however, was where she spent most of her time. Carter had expressed his displeasure with her actions before, but given up. But now it was their birthday and Carter would give no exceptions for her staying in her room. "Carteeeer." Cateline groaned. "Please, just give me a break."

"No." It was sharp and curt.

"Five more minutes?" Cateline pleaded.

"Annie."

"FINE!" Cateline said. "Two more minutes and I'll be out."

"Good," Carter replied with a nod of his head, turning on his heel. He walked to the kitchen where he waited for Cateline . 1 minute passed, then 2, then 3, so on. It got up to 5 minutes and Carter went stomping back to Cateline 's door. Right as he got there, the door swung outward. Carter had shown up a minute too early, for the door smacked him right in the face, knocking him to the ground.

"CARTER!" Cateline exclaimed. "Oh my goodness, are you ok?! I'm so sorry… just let me… here I'll…" words continued to flow out of Cateline 's mouth until Carter put a hand up to stop her.

"I'm fine thanks." He groaned. He sat up with a red bump forming on his forehead. Standing up, he attempted to walk back to the kitchen.

"Carter…" Cateline began.

"It's ok sis." He said, giving a pained smile. He hobbled through the kitchen door and sat on one of their wicker chairs. "Just try not to hit me with any doors anymore."

Cateline smiled back at him, she to sitting on a wicker chair. Their mother had left them on their birthday to go to an Art Gallery-though she did not enjoy art the least bit-with her latest boyfriend, Elijah. Carter and Cateline did not appreciate Elijah. He had black hair, dark brown eyes, and he always wore a menacing look. He rode an entirely black motorcycle, with his black leather jacket, and black ripped jeans. Don't worry, their father was nothing like this. Their father loved plants, and all things nature. He does practically anything to protect creatures of all species, cute or ugly, prey or carnivore. Their father was the nicest man alive. They loved everything about him and missed him deeply. They hadn't talked to their father in 5 years. They didn't even know if he still lived in Wisconsin. He could have moved to the other side of the world.

"So what's the plan?" Cateline questioned. Carter had planned out the whole day. Carter wanted to make this the best birthday ever, for Cateline. They had had it pretty hard the past 5 years, and he decided it was time that they tried to loosen up. He worried about Cateline. She was shy and afraid to take risks. She spent 99% of her time locked up in her room with her nose in a book. The other 1% was the time she spent with Carter. She was nothing close to a social butterfly. Their mother did nothing to help that. All she did was pressure them, and bring them down. She constantly yelled at them. She took out her anger and problems on them. Many times Carter and Cateline had discussed trying to escape from the abusive place. They had never said it, but they were both thinking it… They wanted to run away to their father. They could only dream of running to their father's loving arms. They could only dream of having him hold them in his embrace. They could only dream of his soothing voice and comforting words. And worst of all, they would never hear him say the words "I love you" ever again.

"Well... " Carter began, "I can't tell you." A look of frustration crossed Cateline's face.

"Why not?" She groaned.

"Because," He began, a mischievous grin spreading across his face, "It's a surprise." He knew that Cateline very much disliked surprises, she was extremely curious after all. Cateline sent a glare to Carter, which only made his grin grow continually larger. Cateline rolled her eyes at him.

"You just can't last a day without doing something to annoy me." Cateline teased. Carter's grin continued to grow with every look and word from Catleine which made her even more annoyed. Whenever she was angry, it made Carter laugh, which soon brought Catleine out of her sour mood. Carter had always been there for Catleine and she thoroughly appreciated it. Catleine had always tried to help Carter but was never able to. She was too inverted to be able to help him. She didn't spend enough time around people to know how to read them. All she knew how to read were books. That's all she did. 24/7. Except for those few hours she spent with Carter every week. She was too shy to talk to anyone. She barely even left the house. She was afraid to take risks, though life itself was a risk.

"Smoothie?" Cateline asked? There, right in front of Carter's face, was a smoothie. He had spaced out and not realized that his sister had just been talking to him.

Carter smiled, "Sure." It was a strawberry pineapple smoothie with some added condiments like spinach and a few blueberries. Carter was lactose intolerant so instead of regular milk, it was almond mile. Cateline didnt eat sugar so she added monkfruit, a natural sweetener, instead.
