Chapter 9: 0̵̡̩̹̾̓09

Edmond Von Francaise could vividly picture Corlissa complaining to her father about the waste of time otherwise known as noble tea parties and he couldn’t help but agree to her opinion. The two males then continued to converse about the future that Corlissa will pave.

However, there was something that Corlissa had constantly thought about but never shared with anyone. Her self worth was frighteningly low, whenever she spoke to someone about the plans she wishes to make and factored all the possible consequences that could occur, she would have a common phrase that would constantly repeat itself in her mind. 'I am expendable, my death will happen anyways, no matter what I do I will end up at death's door, I am not worthy enough to be saved,' these negative thoughts would plague her mind but she never shared this with anyone.

The torture of dying and living the same life over and over again made an impact on Corlissa's mental state, she never opened up about it since she believes that no one would care about what she felt. She didn't want to have any chance of her father drift away from her if he deems her too weak or useless.

As such thoughts tormented her each day, she still pushed herself to not show any weakness to anyone. As if time went by in a flash, it was already the day where Corlissa would attend the council meeting with her father.

I never knew maids were this scary! They keep on cooing to me and chasing me with these obnoxious hot pink monochrome dresses that have way too much unnecessary decoration. Do they not understand that I have to attend a council meeting?! A formal event?! This is unbefitting of such a situation.

I finally got away from them and simply wore a white layered ‘Lolita-style’ dress if I were to describe it in ‘modern’ terms. Father and I then travelled to the palace via carriage together, since my father is a Duke, we lived fairly close to the castle. The carriage ride was only an hour and a half.

We arrived at the castle ahead of schedule so we strolled around the palace grounds. For some unknown reason, father picked me up and me around the Royal garden. Whenever we passed a palace worker, they would stare at me with oddity gleaming in their eyes.

The reason behind Duke Eston carrying his daughter around was because he wanted to showcase Corlissa to everyone else. The palace workers were all taken aback since it was the day of the council meeting, an event that only the most knowledgeable, respected highly ranked individuals of the kingdom could attend, yet Duke Veronique had brought his daughter along with him.

Such an irregularity couldn’t go unnoticed, though the Duke had full permission to do so since he had sent a letter to King Merillis in advance asking for consent. The King was intrigued by the statements detailed in the letter and wanted to see if the claims were genuine thus he granted permission for Corlissa Veronique to attend the next council meeting.

This is fun! I feel this strange emotion bubbling up inside of me, I think it’s contentment. I am content right now. Father and I have been walking around the garden, it’s such a simple action yet it brings me great joy. Although I would be overjoyed if my mother was kind to me as well, I should be grateful that I have a mother that is still alive and healthy.

I suppose it’s greed that is building up within my heart since I am growing accustomed to this affection I have been receiving. I should stop desiring more, I am already blessed with such care from my father. If I desire more, then my father may abandon me if he believes that I have become too spoiled, I need to appreciate the abundance of gifts I have been given already.

After waiting for a while later, it was time for the council meeting to commence. The large mahogany doors with gold accents opened to reveal an extravagant room with simple furniture. In the centre of the room, there was a wooden coffee table with cushioned armchairs on either side, at the end of the table, facing the entrance was a lavish armchair, most likely for the king.

When we entered the room, 4 men had already occupied their seats. The King was seated at the end of the table, on his right, two other men were seated. To the King’s left, an unoccupied armchair was situated closest to him, to the left of the empty chair, another man was seated.

“Aha! You really did bring your daughter, Eston,” exclaimed a red-haired man seated to the right of the King.

“Of course! It would be impudent of me for my daughter to not accompany me when she displays such intelligence and wisdom that could benefit the kingdom,” Father sarcastically expressed with a sneer. It appears that they are not on amicable terms.

“Anyways, we’ll be beginning the meeting now, please take a seat, Eston. As well as you, child,” said the King with a smile. “So, let’s start with reports,” he continued. Yet, WHY AM I BEING HELD CAPTIVE BY MY FATHER?!? This is supposed to be a formal event so why am I being held on my father’s lap, this is unbecoming of such a scenario and I can feel my cheeks heating up.

“There is evidence to prove that a major drought in the west will soon occur, we may have to increase taxes in order to secure sufficient funds to prepare for the repercussions,” stated a silver-haired male. His methods are quite...inadequate, in fact, they are a disgrace. He proposed such a ‘half-assed’ solution that would only cause more issues in the long run.

“Just let Eston handle it!” whined the red-haired man.

“What?! NO! I hate dealing with those nobles! They’re so annoying and such a pain to deal with! Tch, let Valion do it, he handles finances anyways,” grumbled my father, I had expected better from him but he slightly disappointed me.

“But I end up doing it every time!” expressed a green-haired male, he appeared to be taken aback by the abrupt duties passed onto him from my ignorant father.

I thought this meeting would be more sophisticated and formal but they’re all just arguing over responsibilities. I thought Sir Edmond said that the attendees of this meeting were only the highest-ranked, most respected people of the Kingdom but right now, all I see are immature adults.

Though I suppose that I can sympathise with their unwillingness to interact with nobles...nobles are quite stuck up and selfish. Although, the king appears to be quite done with the noise that my father and the red-haired man are making.

“Just pick someone to do the job. We’ll start the actual meeting now,” said the King, abruptly everyone stopped talking and a serious atmosphere fell upon the air.
