Chapter 2: DAY 26

"Who are you?" she asked while moving back, her eyes wide from shock and numerous questions. She was looking at him with various questions. How much of him was even real, what was his relationship with her. All those questions plagued her mind. She wanted answers. No, she needed answers.

"I asked WHO ARE YOU? WHY DID YOU BRING ME HERE?" she moved back while shouting. They were now on the road. The water continuously falling from the clouds perhaps mimicking his bleeding heart.

He hated seeing her like this, so broken and hopeless. Her eyes monochrome like a person with no hope. He wanted her to go back to the way she once was. He would do anything to make that happen, perhaps he should.

"I am the person ...… LOOK OUT!" he shouted while lunging towards her. A Truck approaching them at breakneck speed, skidding on the road. He was just able to push her out of the way.

"Wah ..."

She was pushed to the ground, not even registering what was happening. She could feel blood dripping from her head.

WHAM.

She looked up and was horrified at the site. He was there lying in a pool of radiant red blood, bleeding profusely from the side. At this moment she rushed towards him, all her unanswered questions forgotten.

"HELP.HELP. SOMEONE CALL THE AMBULANCE." She could hear people shouting. She rushed up to him, his eyes were unfocused yet they fluttered perhaps registering her presence. He tried raising her arm. She could notice him trying to say something.

"Be quiet. The ambulance is going to be here soon Doc. You are going to be just fine." She said while applying pressure on the wound, thankful for all those lessons he gave them all. He was still trying to say something, she moved her ear closer knowing that it would be something very important, that he was trying to speak through all that pain.

"Mar... Call, Mark." She could only make out those words, yet she understood what he meant. She herself was starting to feel light headed. She could feel darkness clouding her eyes. She wanted to stay awake. She could hear the sirens ringing in the background. People rushing up to them shouting various things she couldn't understand.

One of them came up to her and just before she could lose her last grasp on her consciousness, she passed on his message," he said to call his friend Mark. Use his pho…." And that was when she lost the battle against the incoming darkness.

"It's a hit and run case. The man is bleeding out, his HR is dropping fast. Crush wounds to the side. The female has minor abrasions and a head injury. Call the TAT at the Mayo Hospital, have them ready for incoming." One of them shouted commands while others tried to move them into the ambulance.

He picked up the man's phone to call the person called Mark, yet could not get it to turn on. He pocketed it and moved towards the front of the van. Hoping to save their lives.

At the Mayo hospital, the ER was relatively empty. Due to the rain, the number of patients had dropped. A blonde doctor was making rounds, she was Dr. Evangeline, one of the leading trauma surgeons in the city.

"I am just going to be in the back. Page me in case of an emergency." She said to the nearby person who nodded his head in understanding. She then looked around to see everything running smoothly, praying in her heart that it would remain doing so for some time in the future as well.

She moved towards her room, hoping to catch some respite. While doing so she was thinking about the same person who had been plaguing her thoughts for the last month. He was her protégé. He was enroute to become the youngest cardiothoracic surgeon in the city yet had just come and quit one day, citing some personal problem. Though she wanted to reject his resignation, she had heard that he had a somewhat complicated background, and one look at his face showed that he had already made his decision. So, she accepted it, hoping to see him again as a doctor.

Just as she was about to reach her room, she felt herself getting paged. She groaned and turned it on almost hoping that the problem was not urgent.

"What is it this time?" she asked not hiding her irritation.

"We have an RTA, two patients male and female, coming in. Both code red. We need you in the ER."

She groaned and turned around, "I will be there in a sec. Have them prepare everything. Alert the radiology department too." She said getting back into her rhythm. She wasn't the top trauma surgeon for nothing.

She made her way to the ER and could see the panicked faces of the residents. Well, they would learn Eventually. She could hear the sound of sirens approaching. She made a small prayer and turned her focus on the task ahead.

The ambulance stopped and the doors opened.

"We have a about 20-year-old unconscious female with a head injury and minor abrasions. No other apparent injuries. Her heart rate has been falling continuously." The onsite medic spoke.

She heard and processed it all in a second. " Push in some IV fluids. Have her stabilized and get a CT. STAT. And also check for past medical history. Get her id from her bag."

"The other is a male about 30-year-old, crush injuries to the side heart falling down fast." She looked at the next patient and was shocked for a second.

"Grey…," she mouthed.

"Get him some IV and prepare a vent." She pushed down all the incoming questions and worries.

The medic looked at her and asked," Do you know him miss?"

She nodded while moving towards, the doors." He asked to call someone named Mark, we tried with his phone but, it was broken."

"Yeah, don't worry I will have someone call him." She said while running indoors. She picked up her phone and dialed a number. The person on the other side picked up the phone,

"Hello, Dr. Eva, sorry to remind you but it is my day off." The female on the other side spoke probably stifling a yawn.

"Get to the hospital quickly, they just brought in Grey. He was in an accident and bring Mark with you." She said while closing off the line, knowing that she would be here in a a minute.

"I want updates," she spoke to the nearby nurse, praying desperately in her heart for her former brilliant protégé, who was now battling life and death.
