Chapter 20: Unsure Truths

The hot water falls onto John's back as he stares down at the shower floor. His hands are pressed against the wall in front of him, keeping him up as worry tries to pull him down. He's back in front of that man in the suit, slashing his hand off as the bullet flies into his chest. The pain, the blood. The rush. Then Sarah.

She sits on one of the beds, trying to stay calm after what happened. Turning on the tv she mindlessly scrolls through the channels, stopping on a baking show. Those always help her relax. After an entire episode finishes, she begins to glance over at the bathroom door worryingly. Her hand sits just a few centimeters from it, ready to knock, to ask for answers that he may or may not have, or tell her.

The sudden stop of the shower startles her a bit, and she quickly sits back down.

John wipes the steam off the mirror, relieved to find his eyes their normal shade of light gray. Putting on some socks and pants, he steps out, glancing over at Sarah before walking to the empty bed and taking a seat. They both sit on the edge of their beds, watching the tv in silence.

"...I've uh…thought about this moment, a lot," John mutters, finally breaking the tension, "I never imagined it'd go like this," He scuffs.

Sarah prepares to respond but, just can't find the words to say.

"...What exactly did that man do to you?" She finally manages to ask.

"I don't know," He shakes his head, "But he didn't turn me into a werewolf…I've been one for some time now,"

"W-What? For how long?"

"Little over a year at this point. Before you ask, I never got bit by a werewolf, or drank some strange shit, or did some demonic ritual,"

"Then how did you become one?"

As he tries to think of an answer, the bakers on the show make a heart-shaped cake.

"...Love can bring out the best in people, and the worst. It's pretty obvious what it did to me,"

"Love, made you a werewolf?"

"If I had to fucking guess, yea," He now, a bit irritated because he also thinks it sounds really stupid, "Look, I don't know exactly how I became one, or if I even am one. Full moons don't force me to change, and clearly silver isn't gonna kill me," He gestures at his chest, not a single trace of any injury.

Sarah adjusts herself to be closer to him. She leans forward, placing a hand on his chest, trying to feel for a dent, or maybe a piece of metal under the skin.

"The bullets came out in the shower," John states. She suddenly brings up her other arm, and pinches, "Ow," He states in a monotone.

"Guess werewolves still get pimples," She responds as she sits back up.

"What pimple?" He asks as he looks at where she pinched him.

"There wasn't one, I just felt like pinching you for not telling us sooner,"

"I thought it was better if you guys didn't know…"

"And what? Just let us be told by the military that you abandoned your team, and slaughtered a bunch of innocent people?! We all thought it was true, that you were a monster!"

"I am a monster!" He jumps up, "I did slaughter a bunch of innocent people, and I enjoyed it! I have dreams where I kill you, kill our brother, our mom! And do you know what I feel?!" His breathing becomes shallow as his hands begin to shake. Sarah looks up at him in a twisted mixture of fear and worry. He turns away from her, raising his hands up and pressing them against the wall as he struggles to calm himself down.

Slowly, Sarah gets up, walking over to her younger brother. A caring, but cautious hand rests itself upon his shoulder, cooling the blazing heat that fills it.

"We'll find a way to fix this…And if we can't find a cure, we'll just get use to it,"

Her voice soothes the worry building up inside him, allowing his heart and lungs to finally relax, till a sharp pain stabs him.

"Ow!"

"Sorry, you had a pimple on your back I just had to pop. I'll order some pizza and we can, figure out what to do in the morning,"

She heads to her bed, giving him space, and calls to place an order. John continues standing against the wall, staring at the curtains draped over the window. He doesn't have the heart to tell her…

He doesn't want to be cured.
