Chapter 6: Power of names

A day after Rimuru saved the fox, it woke up with a start. Immediately, the fox checked around it and found Rimuru checking it, which made it recall all that had happened and look at him with gratefulness again.

"Thank you for saving me," the fox's fur had been dyed red due to its excessive blood loss, and it glistened with the sun's rays hitting it as it paid respect and spoke telepathically.

"No, no. It's nothing. I just didn't want to see someone else day that miserably and especially from greedy people." Since he already got used to talking this way from when he did with Veldora, he wasn't surprised.

'It's probably a skill many monsters have to communicate.'

"Still... I can't let my savior go without repaying them. Please, if there is anything I can do for you, I will do it," after the fox said that, it went silent for a few seconds. "Savior, can I become your companion?" it suddenly asked.

"Wha-why so suddenly? Where did you even get this idea from?"

"It's because Savior is a great slime, and it would be an honor to accompany Savior to wherever you are going!"

Rimuru noticed how determined the fox looked and sighed. 'Why is this happening to me? First, those goblins wanted me to go to their village, which would probably have made me go into troublesome matters. Now, this fox wants to accompany. Fine, if it comes to it, then...'

"You can come with me," Rimuru's words made the fox's face brighten up. "But, you will have to work hard and get stronger. If you lag behind, I will leave you."

'If I will have to take care of someone either way, then having the company of someone strong will be more beneficial. It's not like I will really leave the fox behind.'

"Oh right. Emm, what's your name?"

If Rmuru had hands, he would have brushed his head and looked away in embarrassment. He didn't even know the fox's name, and they had been conversing for a while.

"Name?" The fox let out a confused and clueless sound. "I don't have such a great thing."

"You don't have a name? Didn't your parents or you come up with one yourself?"

The fox looked at Rimuru as if he was speaking nonsense. "Names are something special given by powerful beings with immense magical power after establishing Master-subordinate relationships... Savior... could it be that you want to name me?" The fox asked excitedly.

'Names had such power? Then when Veldora named me, it was a good thing? Damn. I gained a good friend!'

"Umm, okay. I'll name you." Rimuru said and started thinking. "How about lunarite? Since you do have black moon-like glistening fur."

"Lunarite? Lunarite. It's a beautiful na-."

While the fox was rejoicing over its new name, a white light enveloped it for a while as changes started occurring inside.

After half an hour, the light faded, and Lunarite came out. His fur became even glossier, his build and size bulked up, reaching a sizable 2 meters tall, and his eyes looked more mature and ferocious.

"What. Just. Happened?"

"I... evolved?!" Lunarite exclaimed in disbelief. "Wait? Did I just talk now? I can talk too! Amazing."

"Evolved? Monsters can do that?"

"Of course! Evolution can happen to any monster, and the possibility of it happening from getting named makes the monster even more powerful and special! Savior, no. Master, thanks to you, I was able to acquire a beautiful name and even evolve, thank you."

"Eh. Welcome, I guess?" Rimuru felt embarrassed again.

"Wait, what did you just call me?"

"Master?"

"Ya, don't do that. We are companions, so call me Rimuru."

"Bu-," when Lunarite was about to protest, it felt Rimuru's dissatisfaction and conceded. "Rimuru-San, then."

'I will call him Master in my mind, though.'

"I have evolved from a Moon Shadow fox into a Dark Moon fox," Lunarite informed. "My strength had increased, and I received some skills. If I were to fight that human again, I would be able to kill him easily."

"So, now that we are finished here. Where should we go, Rimuru-San?"

"Go? I have no particular destination in mind. I just wish to explore the world. How about you? Do you know any interesting place to go to?"

"Hmm, well, there is the kingdom of dwarves, Dwargon. I heard it's a pretty interesting place."

"Kingdom of dwarves? So, it's filled with engineering geniuses and hard-working mechanics kind of people? Those kinds of dwarves?"

"Is there another kind? Though, the kingdom also has other races in it, such as elves."

"Did you just say... elves?!" Rimuru felt his blood boil and his fantasies from his previous lives emerged.

'Meeting elves is one thing everyone wants to happen; I absolutely must meet them! This isn't just about me! It's about fulfilling the dream of every fantasy enthusiast.'

"Then Dwargon is our next destination, but first, we should test your new skills," Rimuru said and used a skill he received from one of the monsters back in the cave.

"Sonar Sense!" he exclaimed.

In a radius of twenty diameters around him, Rimuru was able to see every creature that enters his Sonar Sense. Through it, Rimuru found three bipedal creatures that were around 1.8-2 meters in height and had weapons strapped to their backs or sides. Rimuru recognized one of these people, and it was the man who attacked Lunarite before.

'Although I am not a fan of revenge, these guys should do well as test subjects to Lunarite for now. If things get difficult, I will interfere.'

After making up his mind, Rimuru directed Lunarite to the north-eastern part where he found the targets, "In that direction, the man who almost killed you is with a party of 2 others."

At the mention of the supposed man, Lunarite's eyes turned cold with savageness in them and lunged in the pointed way without further ado.

It was time to hunt the hunter!
