“Watch where you're driving.” Some random angry man yelled at me as he swerved around.
“Damn you.” I scream right back at him. Right now, no one’s feeling matter for me. The only ones I’m worried about are mine, better me holding them back so I don’t strangle Quinneth. I can’t- I can’t fathom how she could do this. Just leave without saying anything, she understands what she’s unleashing, what this could do to now only her but the whole Kingdom of Nygaard.
There was a reason why The First power was killed, because they were too powerful for their own accord. Creating the Zastitnik was seen as an abomination to the witch's council. The First’s power’s magic was original, and way too powerful. For them to give it to humans was wrong. They could abuse the power for their own personal gain, like Rhella did when she made the people who killed her tribe pay. It took two kingdoms to take her down, it wasn’t a easy fight.
When I called Lyra, she hung up the phone on me. After that I tried to call her three more times and left her many texts, to which I know she purposely ignored. Quinneth shares everything with her, and I mean everything. And the way she’s ignoring me, she knows exactly where she is. Maybe she isn’t in Insofar, she could be at the store or something. Hell, who am I kidding it’s last at night she wouldn’t go out by herself, without telling someone of course.
Turning on David St., I see a rather big brick house at the end of the block. I remember Quinneth showing me her house, on the corner was the address. I thought it was useless, her showing me it, but now it’s come in handy.
Realization comes me, that is why she kissed me? I’m always the one to kiss her, to deepen the kiss. She gets rather nervous to be. . .bold with her urges. When she kissed me like the way she did, and deepened it, it caught me off guard. A look in her eyes was alluring. And something came to me, I could faintly hear her whisper last night about saying she would miss me the most. I assumed I was hearing things, but guess I wasn’t crazy after all.
Pulling in the driveway I don’t bother shutting my door. I’m here for one reason only, to figure out what Quinneth as done or would already had done. Walking up to her front door, I see a lamp light coming from the living room, some noise comes from the inside. It sounds like a radio, or a TV.
My hand collides with the wooden door, it takes a few second until a woman answers the door. She looks like the spitting image of Lyra. Unlike Lyra, her hair is dark brown. Eyes the color of clear-ocean water, her skin is tan and she’s almost as tall as me. Her eyes rake over my body, confused on why I’m looking ragged with slow breath.
“Hi, how may I help you.” She smiles at me.
“Um. . .I’m looking for your daughter, Lyra.” From the way I look, I don’t look like a 17-year-old senior. I wonder what’s throwing her off? Is it my rather tall stature, or the light stubble on my chin?
“Are you a friend from school?” asked Mrs. Berkeley.
Before I’m able to give a response, a lying response, Lyra comes and saves the day. When she sees me, a cold look comes across her face. Is she mad at I’m here?
“Hey mom, what’s going on?” she asked her mother.
“This young man said he’s here to see you. Do you know him, he looks rather old to be a high school senior?” She says the last part quietly. Me being a werewolf I was able to pick up on it.
“Yeah, were doing a project together. It’s rather important, it’s due after Spring break. He’s a big nerd, and was held back a few times.” Mrs. Berkeley gives me an embarrassing look; Lyra didn’t even bother to say it quietly.
“Yeah, that’s the truth. It’s urgent I get her input on the pie charts.” That the one thing I always see on Quinneth’s projects.
“Well, I don’t want you guys to fail. I’ll let you two talks.” Mrs. Berkeley gives me one last smile and walks back to the living room. I wait until she’s out of ear shot and start talking.
“Why are you ignoring my call and texts?"
“Oh, you called? I didn’t know.” I could tell that she’s lying, and I think she knows that I know that she’s lying.
“Don’t lie to me Lyra. Quinneth may be in danger and I need to know where she is.”
“I thought she was with you. I don’t know where she is, I’ll see you later.” She tries to shut the door, but I hold it open with my foot. She kicks at my foot, but I don’t even budge. A groan escapes her mouth. “Let’s go outside I don’t want my parents to be lurking, they have a history of that.”
We walk to her backyard; we sit on a bench in a garden. Bushes of roses, sunflowers, and Begonia’s fill around us. It is really beautiful, if my situation wasn’t dire, I would admire then. On us a light shine from her porch.
“Lyra, I need to know where she is. She didn’t tell me anything, just left while I was asleep. I'm under the theory that she went to Insofar with Yount.”
“I wouldn’t know a thing.” Was all she said. Her eyes defer away from me, focusing on the daffodils at her feet.
“She wouldn’t go without telling someone where she went, and that person happens to be you.” For the first time since we’ve been out her, her eyes connect with mine. In her eyes I could read everything. She knew where Quinneth was, but couldn’t tell me. Something was holding her back, holding her back from telling me the truth.
“She told me not to tell anyone, even you.” her voice is barely a whisper, but I can pick up on it.
I do something that makes me feel awkward, and from the look on her face her too. My hands grab hers; my warmth fills her cold ones. “I heard you have a boyfriend, John?”
“Jack.” She says correcting me.
“Jack, right. If you knew he was somewhere, or with someone, that could harm him wouldn't you want to know.” A sincere look comes across her face, she battling inside.
A big sigh leaves her lungs, “Oh god she’s going to kill me. She went to Insofar with Piper. In 2 days, she’s going to unleash The First Power.”
“WHAT!” I find myself accidently stepping on one of Lyra’s mother’s fresh daffodils, sorry plant.
“Shhh.” She pulls me back down to the bench. “If my parents hear they’ll come out here. What are you going to do?”
“Uh, I’m going to go get her.” She shakes her head frantically, her red hair moves with the wind. “I’m not leaving her there; we can find a resolution.”
“She had to do this Alexander, when Yount killed Irene, she was scarred. Quinn was already set in her ways, she had to protect everyone. Protect you. When she met with Yount, he threatened to come after you. Her love for you is strong, I’ve never seen her feel deeply about anyone before. You have to let her do this.”
Could I? Could I sit idle by while she risks her life for me?
“Alex where are we going?” I hear Aren say behind me, a hint of annoyance is in her voice.
“Yeah, where the hell are we? It’s late at night and I missed my phone call with Luci. This better be good.”
“Oh, it is.” We arrive at our destination. I tell them to dunk down behind me, in the bushes.
I look at Christian, his face suddenly lights up once he figures out where we are.
“Is this-”.
“Yeah, Insofar.” I finish is sentence.
“What the- Insofar? Are you mad Alexander!? Are you trying to get us killed.” Aren starts smacking me on my arm, maybe I should have told them where we were going before I dragged them from the house.
“First of all OWWWWW! Second of all, I just need you guys to look out so I can steal Quinneth back.”
“Steal a human, does that even sound right.” Christian questions.
“She has no idea what’s she going to unleash for the grave. I need to reason with her and take her home with me.”
“You are so lucky were bestfriends. If we weren’t I would have broken your neck and left you in the woods.” Me and Christian give Aren a scary look.
“Don’t be so bold Deshka Aren.”
“What did I say about calling me that? Let’s just get this over this.”
