Chapter 63: He's Back

An Hour before Quinneth came home...

“Alpha.” One of the pack members says bowing to my mother. “We are all ready for you.” She points over to the stage. When anyone who is not an Alpha speaks to one has to bow.

“Ok, thank you.” We leave the pack member and walk onto the stage with my dad. This is the first time I've been my dad since the put up the ban.

“Welcome everyone to the night of the wolf moon.” He says through the microphone. Everyone in the crowd starts to cheer. “The wolf moon represents our ancestors that howled at the moon when they were starving from the long winters. They were strong and survived the harsh winters which allows us too here today. We honor them by appreciating the food that the pack members have made, and loving our families.” He finishes up the statement and hands the microphone over to my mother.

“Yes, everyone let’s focus our attention on this pupil who will tell us the story of Selene, the moon goddess.” My mother hands the mic to a little girl with a missing tooth in the front and pig-tails. We walk off the stage and take our seats.

Every year one student from the pack elementary school tells the story of the moon goddess and the creation of the lycanthrope. When I was younger, I had to tell the story, now hearing it for the 19th time I know it now word for word.

The little girl adjusts the mic in her hand and begins telling the story. “This is the story of Selene, the moon goddess. Born to the parents of Hyperion and Theia. Her parents described her as a loving and adventurous child. She was smart, witty and her brothers and sisters loved her dearly. Selene was not allowed to leave her house without a chaperone, because she so beautiful someone would try to take their as their own. Disobeying her parents Selene snuck out. While walking in the woods Selene came across a man. Now this was not just any man he was as tall as a tree, big as a mountain and eyes the color of the ocean. From the moment she laid eyes on him it was love at first sight. From dusk to dawn they spent all their time together, walking in the meadow, reading and eating grapes. As their love grew, she wanted to marry him and spend the rest of her life being his wife. When she told her parents of this they were outraged, they didn’t want her to be some ‘Lowman's’ wife they wanted her to be a goddess, a queen amongst men and women. Heartbroken she ran to her room and cried all night. The next day she had to go to the Kingdom of Arcadia with her parents for business, still sad from last night she mustered up enough energy to go. Once they arrived, they went inside the castle to be greeted by people and food. Instantly the room becomes silent and the king walks in. Looking up Selene’s eyes brighten up as she sees the man who she was forbidden from her parent to see, he was Lycaon, the King of Arcadia.” The little girl cleared her throat and kept going.

“Behind him walks in one of the most powerful gods of all times, Zeus. Lycaon offers Zeus some meat to eat. Zeus happily look the meat, but before eating it he noticed something was wrong with it suddenly he realized it was human flesh. If Zeus were to have eaten his human flesh, he would have lost all his powers and became a werewolf. In anger and betrayal, he makes Lycaon eat the meat, turning him into a werewolf. The whole court was mortified, especially Selene. She fell in love with a cruel and impious king. She was disgusted and angry with herself, she never told anyone or her parents that he mans she fell in love with was Lycaon. Lycaon ran out the kingdom and was never seen of again. Years went by and she focused on her work putting Lycaon, a man once thought as good, out of her mind. From her years of hard work her father, Hyperion offered her the position of being the moon goddess, so happy she took the job. With being the moon goddess, she was able to pick the mates of the werewolves and was the person they worshiped. The whole reason she took the job was to make sure that werewolves had good mates that loved them and were true to them, not like Lycaon was. Right now, she sits up at the moon smiling down on us, happy for what we have made of her creation, thank you.” Once the girl finishes up everyone stands up and gives her a round of applause.

My father takes the mic from her hands. “Thank you so much that story of Selene was well said and beautiful.” The little girl bowed and ran offstage to most likely was her mother. “OK you guys let the feast began.” Everyone rushes over to the buffet tables to claim their food. One negative thing about being in a pack full of werewolves is that they have the appetite of 10 people, literally not even exaggerating.

While everyone is trying to get all the good food they can from the buffet I look around for Aren and Christian. I haven't seen them around all day, it’s like their avoiding me or something. This morning for breakfast I didn’t see them and even for lunch no sign of them. Still looking around I spot them by the pack doors talking to each other. I get up from my seat and walk over to them, once they see me coming their eyes dart to each other. What Is going on?

“Hey you guys." I say sticking my hands in my pocket. “Good rendition of the moon goddess huh?”

“Yeah, I guess.” Aren replies plainly to me while looking at her drink.

“Quite intriguing.” Christian chimes in.

“Ok, what is wrong with you guys? I haven't seen you around lately and this conversation is blander than oatmeal.” I look at them intently trying to read their faces.

“It’s just... Lately you’ve been a Debbie downer since you haven't been able to see Quinn. Also, you’ve been working yourself to death.” Christian mutters out.

Aren looks at me and nods saying she agrees with Christian.

“What?” I say shocked. “I haven't been a Debbie downer, have I?” They both shake their heads erratically.

“Sorry... It's just not being able to see her as made me feel off and kind of down. It’ll be better I promise.” I say promising them.

“You sure?” They both say in unison.

“Positive.” Christian tugs me by my neck bringing me in for a hug.

“Good to have our Alex back.” Aren punches my shoulder. I wince in pain.

“You know that didn’t hurt.”

“Actually, it did.” I rub my shoulder. I felt that punch hit my bone.

I turn around to hear my father talking through the microphone. “If everyone will quiet down, I want to make an announcement. I know that everyone has been going insane since the lockdown was put in place 2 weeks ago. Since the wolf moon is tonight, everyone is happy and it’s a beautiful night the ban is officially lifted.” My eyes bugle open as a smile grace my face. All the pack members cheer loudly and start shifting into their wolfs, most likely going for a run.

I turn to Aren and Christian with desperation on my face. “Go on.” Christian says.

“Yeah, go see her.” Aren smiles at me.

I run towards the woods and shift into my wolf. I feel the cool night wind go through my fur. My feet prancing on the grass. As I run, I look up to the moon and howl, I know that the moon goddess had something to do with it she always knows when to work her magic. Once I reach Quinneth’s house I shift back into a human. Going behind one of her trees in her backyard I grab my backup clothes and put them on. When I was here before, in her backyard, I placed some clothes here because I knew that it would come a moment when I shifted and there would be no clothes for me. Now I need to bring some clothes back here when I come back.

Looking up at her bedroom window I see it’s dark. Actually all the lights are off. She must not be here. Suddenly, I hear laughter coming from the front of her house. Walking to the side of her house hiding myself so she doesn’t see me I look at her. Oh, crap I forgot she had homecoming tonight, I would have loved to take her to that. She looked absolute beautiful; her dress hugged every single curve just right. She's talking to some guy I can’t make out his face, she leans in a gives him a hug. Interesting.

He gets into a car and drives off. She stands and waves until they leave, in her tracks her eyes look up to the moon admiring it. In his moment she has never looked more beautiful, just peaceful and calm. Turning away from the moon she walks to her front door. I really need to see her. I can't go to the front door because she’ll know I came through her backyard and was spying on her, so I do the only logical thing and go through her balcony door. Using my super strength, I climb up her house until I’m on her balcony door. My hands rest firmly on the knobs the door opens up easily, she should lock this next time anybody could sneak up here, like me.

Once I step foot in the room, I accidently crash into her painting easel. “Shit.” I whisper to myself. While getting myself together she instantly bursts into the room with a baseball bat screaming. Once she sees it’s me, the baseball bat drops to the floor and she just stares at me. She croaks out one word. One word I've been longing to hear her say.

“Alexander.”
