"Ok, so I've got the fettuccine noodles, sauce, heavy cream and garlic cloves. Now what else do I need?" I tell my grandfather on the phone as I adjust it in my hand.
"We have salt, butter and all that stuff all you need to get is some more flour and parsley." He says while fumbling the phone.
"Grandpa what are you doing sounds like you're in a tornado or something." I turned the corner to the next isle over for the flour.
"I just... I can't find anything to wear. I haven't been on a date since John F. Kennedy was president." He tells me.
I belch out a laugh. "Look just let me get the rest of the items on the list and I'll come home and pick you out of an outfit. How does that sound?"
"Nice, thank you Quinney." He says. Ever since my Grandmother died, he's swore off women. He feels that if he dates another woman, he'd be cheating on her. My Grandmother would not want him moping around she would want him to live his life, and that's what I'm going to do, help him live it. I tell him goodbye and finish getting everything on my list.
Arriving to the checkout line I lay everything on the conveyor belt.
"Will that be all honey?" The cashier lady says.
"Yes, that's it." I reach in my back pocket to get my wallet and feel nothing. I move my hands to the other side of my pocket then my fronts, nothing.
"That will be 36.50." The ladies tell me while waiting for me to give her money.
"See this is kind of a funny story. I left my wallet at my house is there any way I can sit this aside and I can come back and pay for it?" I ask in a pleading tone.
"I'm sorry honey I can't do that." She reaches over the conveyor belt and starts to grab the food.
"Uh wait I-." I'm instantly cut off by a familiar voice.
"I've got it." A male voice says reaching over to hand the cashier lady and 50-dollar bill. "Keep the change."
I turn around to see the husky male voice belongs to Alexander.
"You really don't have to." I put my hands up to the cashier lady indicating her not to take the money from him. "I can put all of this back."
He gently grabs my hand and rests it down to my side. "I've got this I insist." I work it over in my head for a few seconds. I mean this date is very important to Grandfather and I don't want to mess it up because I'm too proud. I make my decision.
"Alright, you can pay for the food, but I will pay you back every cent." He nods in agreement and hands the lady the cash. We stand in silence while she bags up all the groceries. Once she's done, I give him a thank you and wait for him to pay for his stuff, we both walk out together.
"I guess I should thank you twice." I say while pushing the cart over to my car. He looks at me with confusion on my face while he tucks his wallet in his back pocket. That wallet probably cost like a month of my minimum wage job.
"What for?" He asks trying to read my face. His lips purse up at me.
"Well you paid for my groceries saving me from mortal embarrassment. Then you also saved me from that guy at the Blondes party last week." We arrive to my car and I unlock the door.
"I would do anything for you." He confidently says.
"You barely know me." My truck pops up and I start to put the groceries in the car. Alexander picks up some bags and starts helping me put them in the car. I give him a little smile as a sign for gratitude.
"It's not about the knowing of one it's about the feeling you get from them. The assurance that they are a good person."
"Who said that?" I ask.
"My Grandfather. He always looked for the best in people. He swore he could feel people's emotions, feeling if they were a good person or not. You can care about someone even if you don't really know them." He says this while looking deep into my eyes. If I didn't know any better, I think that he would try to kiss me right now.
"Your Grandfather sounds like a wise man." I close the trunk of my car and fully give him my undivided attention.
"He was. I guess this is where we part ways." He sticks out his hand for me to shake. I raise my hand up to shake his. The moment my hand connects to his it's like electricity sparks from his body to mine. We instantly move our hands away from each other in shock.
He walks off to his car, but before he goes far, I step in front of him. "Can I have your address?" I ask.
"Why you just can't get away from me." He says with a smirk on his face. I roll my eyes and laugh.
"No, I need it so when I pay you back, I know where to drop the money off." I tell him. "Maybe I could come by tomorrow and drop it off? Noon?
"That won't work I'll be somewhere at that time?"
"Well I work tomorrow so maybe you can drop it off there? It's an antique shop called Ida's, it's on Madison and Grove. You know it?
"Not really, but I'll find it so I'll see you in a day then?" He says with a smile on his face.
I give him a shy smile. "One day one night I can hardly wait." He gives me a wink and walks off to his car. I release the breath that I held in my chest and open the door to get in my car. I quickly shut the door and retrace the moment.
The way he smelt to the touch of his hands. I touch my hands remembering the spark that happened. What was that? Maybe he just rubbed his hands together and shocked me. I shrug off the matter and head home.
