The first step to this was to choose a theme for your system based on your elements. It could be 'speed', 'damage', 'defense', 'attrition', 'cost reduction', 'close combat enhancement', etc. 

So for Ash who had the elements of Gravity, Water, Earth, Life, and Lightning. His chosen Main Element was Lightning, and he had shown startling proficiency in Gravity.
