First, he worked on Flesh to Stone, turning the rock slab's various parts onto living flesh before turning it back into stone. After all, with how most Material element spells worked, there was no need to always replace used material with a new one. 

You could just change it back with a little bit of mana to its original state and then re-do whatever you made before. This was actually one thing the Material element had over Transmutation.
