Chapter 2: Viridian Orphanage

It's been five years since I got transmigrated and I am 12 years old now. Life has been very tough and I am almost at a point where I am going to use my 100 luck points but I need to persist one more month.

Life in the orphanage is pretty bad, you don't even get to eat proper meals a day. When I arrived in Viridian city, I was transmigrated into a seven-year-old body. He was called Jay with no last name. He was left at the door of the orphanage when he was just a year old and orphanage named him 'Jay'.

Jay was an intelligent kid for his age, though he did not like the idea of travelling with pokemon and challenging gyms, he liked to study on different pokemon and was curious about their behaviours in the wild. Orphanage warden Miss Vanessa warned him multiple times not to go into the forest for the sake of observing Pokemon. But, his curiosity urged him to get into the woods, he got attacked by a swarm of scyther and died due to severe injuries. Jay died and a new soul took over his body. The moment I took over the body, all my injuries disappeared and in no time I was back to my original state.

My new body was normal in terms of look, it was bland and when you blend into a crowd, no one will notice you. I was skinny and weak, maybe it was malnutrition or because of rapid healing. The only noticeable thing about my body is the pitch-black eyes and hair, it was so dark that it has a glossy feel it but even then it's a pretty common hair colour around here. I was very short back then but over the last five years I have grown a lot and now I stand five foot tall. I still look skinny and weak due to the food scarcity in the orphanage.

The orphanage is sponsored by the League, all those who are over 12 years need to start looking for jobs outside or start a desperate Pokemon journey. Unlike the games, the real world is too cruel. Pokemon in the wild are hostile to humans and even when caught, you need to subdue them with dominance or earn their respect. There are many cases where the trainer dies due to his incompetence, no pokemon will want a weak trainer. On Earth, we had stats for Pokemon and they don't apply here, any Pokemon can become strong enough to be an elite level. There are some exceptions, some species are innately weak like most of the bug types and some no evolutionary line species.

five years ago when I got into this body I inherited the memories of Jay. He was a total loner and anti-social, he only pesters Miss Vanessa to teach him about everything outside and never had friends. I too maintained the same character after returning from the forest not to raise any suspicion, I sometimes go to the local library to learn about the common sense of the world. First, when I came here I thought of all the things I can do, like introducing some Eevee evolutions, new fairy type or some unknown possible evolutions that I knew from the previous world but the reality is harsh, all those things are already found and there is nothing I knew that this world did not know. Mega evolutions exist but all the trainers who have mega-evolutions are low key. So there is not much info on them.

Right now I am exactly 11 years 11 months old. I have to find a job in a month or I will die of hunger, there is not one single person who takes pity on a twelve-year-old kid and give a job. Anyway, I don't mind that because from the start I had a plan. No matter how cruel this world is I will become a pokemon trainer, I had no job and had to do some labour here and there to earn every single penny. I did not even spend it on food, there are many days where I went to sleep with an empty stomach. Although league sponsors food for orphans that money becomes less than one third by the time it reaches the orphanage. Politics, crime and bribes are very common here.

In the last five years, I earned 500 poke dollars which are enough for a Pokeball, food and some potions. I saved the one time use luck points for the next month, I will use it right before I catch a Pokemon. This was my plan on luck points, most people here have below-average potential Pokemon. The first pokemon you catch is what that separates you from other trainers, a rare and good potential Pokemon will set you on a solid path in the long run. So I need all the luck I have to catch a rare and high potential Pokemon.

There are no levels for Pokemon and the evolution of pokemon can happen anytime, for example, a chameleon may evolve into Charizard before it reaches level thirty or after reaching level fifty. Higher the potential of Pokemon, longer it takes for an evolution. Sometimes a highly potential Pokemon may not be a good thing to have, it might die before it reaches its final form that's why trainers are so important, they need to bring the best out of their Pokemon. As the saying goes 'There is no weak Pokemon, only weak Trainers.'

Pokemon potentials are checked through a device in the pokemon centre, they are divided into six colours, Violet Blue Green Yellow Orange Red. Violet is considered as a legendary potential, you can find no pokemon with that potential. I heard some rumours from Miss Vanessa that the champion lance has a violet potential Dragonite. Most of the pokemon in the wild have Red or orange potentials, Yellow is very rare and Green is the potential of most elites, Starters given by the professors are of Green potential. To get a starter you need to graduate from the pokemon academy of that region and be in the top three. Only three starters are given a year, they are the rarest and you can never find them in the wild.

Pokemon academy takes in students when you are eight years old and it's impossible for an orphan to get in, only reputed families can get a seat due to high fees. Rumours are that Professor Oak is trying is his best to convince the league for a limited number of admissions for orphans and commoners. I don't think it will be done soon, anyways, for rest others there is a local library in every city to self learn. Library charges only one dollar for a day and interested kids can learn, that's how I learnt all the information. But, most of the kids never go even closer to the library building.

The life span of Pokemon depends on how strong a Pokemon is and their typings. Strength of Pokemon and trainers are divided into 7 categories namely- Beginner(LVL 1-19), intermediate(LVL 20-34), advanced(LVL 35-49), Elite(LVL 50-69), King(LVL 70-79), Champion(LVL 80-89), Master(LVL 90+). At present, Professor Oak is the only Pokemon master alive, his Dragonite and Alakazam are at master level. Dragon, Fairy, Steel and Ghost types have a very high life span, some species of these type pokemon have a life span equals to that of a quasi-legendary if reached their final form but they also have their problems, breeding of these types is very tough and they are the rarest types. Bug, normal and fighting types have the lowest life span but they are easier to breed. Depending on the species their life span ranges from 10 to 70 years. Any Pokemon that reaches a King level has a life span over 100 years irrespective of species, rest other types have medium life spans as breeding standards vary from one to another.

In the last five years, I learnt a lot from books in the library. Although everything is theoretical knowledge, it's still very useful for my journey next month. I spent most of the time earning money and reading books so I never made any friends, not that it mattered anyway. There are currently eight regions in the Pokemon world and sometimes you can find other region Pokemon here and there. Galar and Alolan pokemon are still very rare in Kanto but League is doing their best to introduce them here. I sometimes talk to trainers that pass by Viridian city and get as much as info possible. I can't say I learnt a lot from them but decent enough to start my journey. They give you some tips on training and what to avoid at the start, most of them are not friendly but you get a few who share some info.

As far as evil organisations are concerned, Team Rocket is still superior in Kanto and I don't know much about other regions. Giovanni is still low key and very rarely you hear about Team Rocket on news but in the last ten years, they are becoming widely known in Kanto.

Now I have exactly a month before I start my journey so I will go buy a Pokeball tomorrow and then plan on what items to get after catching a Pokemon. Now I need a good night sleep and a long day tomorrow, I slowly dozed off with expectations of a great beginning.....
