Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven

Liam then pulls up to the school to get his little boy. As he waits for him outside of the main office, inside the clear see-through waiting room,'' hey bud' 'says Liam as Thomas walks through the door. Tom waves at his dad continually, still not talking for the past three days now. Then he takes off his backpack and hands it to his dad, not wanting to carry it anymore.''How was your day?'' asks Liam while holding his little boy's hand and has his backpack in the other. Thomas then points to his bag to acknowledge his dad about lowering it to his level. Liam sees what his son is pointing to and drops Tom's backpack, so he can unzip and begins to write on his whiteboard and shows his dad.''It was good, but I wish mommy could see me in tomorrow night's show.''

Liam reads it and then crouches down to his son's level,'' I know you do. If I could bring your mommy back, I would do it in a heartbeat, but you know what, bud. Your mom will have the best seat from above in the audience, ''says Liam, reminding him that his mom will always be with him. She might not be there in person but will always be with him throughout his life. Thomas then looks up at his dad, feeling a little better but not all the way to start speaking again.''Bud, what happened that night at the Christmas Cookie Party on Friday?'' asks Liam wanting to know. How to make his little boy smile and talking again about how to deal with the loss. Not realizing he should be giving himself the same advice that he is telling Thomas.

Even though Tom wants to tell what happened that night, not ready to tell just yet, Thomas looks up at his dad, then looks down & stares at his feet. Still being silent makes Liam heartbreaking as a father that he can't help his baby boy. Before this moment, there wasn't anything big or small that he couldn't solve. This, however, is the first time that Liam feels where he has failed as a parent, which. It is something that no parent wants to go through, seeing their child in pain and not being able to do anything about it & heal their pain.

''Bud, I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong?'' says Liam wanting to know what's bothering his baby boy? ''The night of the party when grandpa and I were building the Gingerbread house, I started thinking about mommy and then about the night she was coming to get me and never made it to pick me up. I always felt that I was the reason that she died ''says Thomas, finally speaking!

''Oh, buddy, that's what was bothering, oh my gosh no Tom. Your mom dying that night was not your fault, ''says Liam picking him up in his arms, feeling so bad that this has been what his baby boy has been thinking this whole time. Wishing that he noticed the signs about why Thomas wasn't speaking that night when it first started.''It wasn't?'' asks Thomas, confused since he thought that it was his fault.

''No, buddy, it was the driver that hit mommy's car who was the victim; you asking mommy to pick you up was not your fault. It's not like you knew that it was going to happen. When did you start feeling this way?'' asks Liam. He tries to comfort his baby boy as much as possible but is thrilled mainly to hear his baby boy talking again. Although on the other hand is wondering how long that he has been feeling this way? When grandpa and I were decorating our Gingerbread house, it made me think about how mommy and I came up with the idea. Then she would change it around on grandpa and made him believe that he did that with a little bit of help from her. It made me realize how much I missed her and then decorating cookies as you and Hazel came over. It was something that mommy liked to do and when the icing bag exploded. It brought back memories of that night, so I ran and hid ''says Thomas. He was finally telling his daddy what has been bothering him all of this time.

''I should have known that it had something to do with mommy, as he sits Thomas down on the bench and sits down next to him. I blamed myself as well for a long time for not being home that weekend, ''admits Liam to his son that he was also in the same boat.''How long did it take for you to stop blaming yourself?'' asks Thomas curiously.''Shortly after ''' lies Liam because he hasn't stopped blaming himself for losing her but doesn't want Thomas to know that his dad hasn't forgiven himself for losing his wife.

''How shortly after, though?'' asks Thomas, very smart and curious for his age,'' maybe a few months after ''says Liam, continuously lying through his teeth, not wanting to tell his son the truth.''Then why do you always seem sad?'' asks Thomas wanting to know more?''I miss her so much, bud, and everything, in this town, reminds me of your mom. She was the love of my life ''says Liam admitting that living in Peppermint is getting hard for him now with her gone. As tears roll down both cheeks, not liking to talk about Zoey and everything that happened in the last year. However, Liam talks about her for his son even though it causes him deep pain and sorrow.

Thomas then wipes his daddy's tears with both of his thumbs, knowing that his mommy would've done the same thing if she was alive to this day.''Do you want to leave Peppermint?'' asks Thomas, wondering if his daddy is thinking of leaving the only place that only both of them have ever known?''No, of course not bud, I mean, yes, everywhere in this town reminds me of your mom. Our family is here, mommy is buried here, and this is our home, ''says Liam. Thomas smiles and hugs his dad,'' where is Hazel? I want to see her'' asks Thomas

''Maybe later, okay bud, ''says Liam. Unsure how to face Hazel after kissing her then walking away.
