Class is out, as I am walking to my truck I hear my name being called, glancing around I see Remey catching up to me.
"Hey, um, I was wondering if you wanted to grab some coffee or something, being new in town, I don't know anybody," He proposed with a smirk.
I stared at his face still with the terrible feeling not to trust him "No" was all I responded and raced to my pickup without looking back.
Heading home my mood changes from my concerns at school. My father will be home today.
I haven't seen him in over a month, and I was missing him, specifically his cooking.
I still don't understand why we couldn't employ a cook while he was gone, we have the money, and even though I was experienced in many subjects, cooking was not one of mine or uncle Orson's skills, but dad refused.
That leads back to not having relationships with people and the fact that my family is extremely private.
I quizzed him how he met my mother with these policies, and he would beam with the remembrance of her and claim that when I meet my other half, I would learn one day.
I do not see that happening anytime in the near future, I like being by myself. Well, I have found no one I have been attracted to, sure I have seen hot boys, but never anyone that spoke to my heart, I guess.
Finally, making it home, I see my dad's car, picking up my backpack and running inside, I see him standing at the counter with his back facing me.
Putting my backpack down, I decide to sneak up on him in the kitchen, but of course, over the years I have tried this and constantly failed.
He plucked me up before I could startle him and held me in a bear hug, tickling my sides.
"Quit it dad" I say breathlessly, I missed him.
"Hey honey, I missed you. Are you ready for your present?" I sway my head excited, he constantly brings me back something from his trips.
He hands me a little box that I open in a hurry causing him to snort "Oh dad it is wonderful" as I stare at the black jeweled owl necklace.
I hug him and place it on my neck, Owls were my favorite, I used to joke as a child that I was being trained to be an owl, stealthy and wise.
"Honey, I have another surprise for you, I am taking you to a charity ball next month" he looks at me with a grin.
"What? Like an actual ball, fancy gown and all?" at that, he chuckles at my face of dread.
"Yes, the prince of Duvirnaire is having one when he visits next month, I have been requested, and you will be my plus one," he explained... oh my god, that means I have to find a gown!
It is ordinary for my dad and uncle to be invited to these events, but I don't get to go often and I hate wearing dresses "Dad, does this mean I can start traveling with you now? You realize my birthday is next week?"
My father glances at me with a blend of delight and heartache "Yes sweetheart" he replied making me grin.
"How was your class today?" and with that, we changed the subject.
I told him about my day with my uncle and the new boy in school. The only response from his was a lifted eyebrow and an order to pay attention to my surroundings and stay away from him.
I agreed, and we continued on about the plans for the ball, ate supper, and then it was time for sleep.
Dreaming that night of the ball, I watched myself slipping on my gown in front of everybody, all kinds of embarrassed. Of course, it had to be a stupid costume.
The next few days were loaded with more quizzes, training, and shopping for items for the ball, and excellent food from my dad. My world was all right and peaceful again now that he was home.
Tomorrow is my last class... and my birthday, not wishing to make a huge deal out of it like usual, but I was secretly excited about it.
