Chapter 5: Singlets - Volunteer Lifeguard

Zoe's POV:

It's my first day as a volunteer lifeguard today and I am so excited as I get to be on the beach with the Bondi lifeguards. It is my dream for me to be a lifeguard and this is the closest that I can get to as I don't have the qualifications to become one yet so this is the closest, I can get to be one and hopefully once I have been doing it for over a year, I can get the qualification to be one.

I used to be a volunteer lifeguard while I lived in England, but I moved to become one down on this beach. I am also a part-time paramedic so I have a job that pays for my bills so that I can spend more time at the beach and so that I can get closer to getting the qualification that I want. I am not only working here because I am a fan of the show. It is because it is a really good place to train to get the qualification.

I wake up at around 5 am so that I can go for a run along the beach and by the time I get there it is 5.15 am and the lifeguards are setting the beach up for later. I run past them while they are setting up and I get to know where everything is when I finish running at 5.30 am, I just sit down on the sand to watch the sunrise. I eventually get up to go home to get ready for work down here.

Singlet's POV:

I am one of the people setting up the beach today. I don't like doing it, but I also do like doing it as I get to see the sunrise. As I am setting up the beach, I see someone running down the beach. You never see people running on the beach, so it is a good experience for me to see her running along the beach. I finish setting up the beach but don't see her, so I think that she went home to get ready for work. I was kind of upset though because I didn't get to talk to her. Hopefully, she comes down later, so I get to talk to her.

Zoe's POV:

I get home at around 6 am and then get ready for work. I have to be down at the beach at 7.45 am so that I am there before the crowd gets there. I get into the uniform that I have to wear and style my hair into two dutch braids so that my hair won't get in my way while I am rescuing people. I get down at the beach at 7.45 and go to the tent where we are stationed. I get there 15 minutes before the rush of people come down onto the beach so I can put my stuff away. I decide to take a walk down the beach seeing as it wasn't busy but when I get down to north Bondi, I see someone in trouble I don't see any lifeguard near so I do what any other lifeguard would do. I went to rescue the man, but I didn't have a board with me I only had the lifebuoy with me, so I saved him with that and managed to get in and out within 2 minutes. It took me twenty seconds to reach him but then it took longer for him to let me rescue him and get him back in so by the time I got him back in I had to go back down to the tent where we are meant to be stationed.

Singlet's POV:

I am stationed in the tower today and all of the boys went down to do their jobs at around 7.30 am and they all either went down to the middle of the beach or down the south end. I was looking through the binoculars and saw a head bopping up and down in the water with its arm up. I radioed down to the boys that someone is needed down at North Bondi as someone is in trouble. Corey radioed back up to me telling me that he was on his way down but then I see someone running out into the surf and getting to the man and helping him back to the shore, so I radioed to Corey "Hey Corey. Um... you don't have to go down there anymore as someone saved him, but I don't know who it was"

"Wait. What. Are you sure that it isn't a volunteer lifeguard, I don't know how it is as they aren't meant to start till 11 am?" He replied.

"Can I go down and ask them? But you will have to come up here if I do because nobody is here with me." I ask/say.

"Yeah sure. On my way" He says. When Corey gets here, I take the Buggy to the volunteer lifeguard tent. I see someone in there sitting down looking at the sea. "Hey. I saw the save you did down at North Bondi. That was pretty risky without aboard as it is pretty choppy down that end today, but I am impressed"

"Thanks for that. Your Singlets, aren't you? I'm Zoe"

"Yeah, I am. How did you know? Also, nice to meet you, Zoe."

"I'm a huge fan of Bondi rescue. I know all of your names but don't worry I am also here to work at the beach and for another job. I am not just a creep who decides to put on this uniform just for fun and pretend to be someone I'm not."

"Ok cool. So, what is your other job?"

"Oh. I'm a part-time paramedic. I am only part-time as I am using my free time to be here and earn my lifeguard qualification. I am nearly done with it and then I can get it and apply for a job." We end up talking for 15 to 20 minutes before he is called back to do his actual job but what neither of them knew was that Hoppo saw the save and listened into the first part of the conversation.

---- A few weeks later ----

It's been a few weeks since I have been working down at Bondi beach and Singlets has introduced me to all of the boys we all get along really well, and I have also gotten to know Singlets well. I like him, but I don't know if he likes me back, so I haven't asked him out just in case he doesn't like me. Hoppo has been extremely nice to me when he found out that I wanted to be a lifeguard and he has been helping me get my qualification I have been extremely thankful that he has as I am close to getting it. I am working at the beach today and me being a paramedic as well has helped me a lot as I can help the boys save people's lives better than they can. I like working with the boys, but I am scared that when I get my qualification that I have to get a job at another beach and won't be able to work with them anymore.

I am patrolling the beach to make sure that no one is in trouble when I see Hoppo walking towards me. I stop walking so that he can get to me easier. It wasn't odd for the boys to see me talking with Hoppo as he just likes to check up on me to see how I am doing and how I am getting on with getting my qualification. When he gets to me, he says "Can you come with me to my office so we can talk I want to do this in private."

"Yeah sure. Why though? We normally talk on the beach with lots of people around"

"I need to say this in private and I don't want any of the boys to hear this."

"Ok. That's fine." We walk up to his office while talking about what is going on in life. When we get to his office, he closes the door and then locks it just in case one of the boys comes. "So, what do you want to talk to me about," I say

"Well. You know that I have been keeping an eye on you recently"

"Yeah."

"So, I have been keeping an eye on your performance and I think that you deserve this now so I would like to give you this." He hands me an envelope with something inside of it. I open it up to see a certificate for my lifeguard qualification. I start jumping up and down and when I stop, I give Hoppo a hug thanking him. He hugs me back saying that I deserve it. He then says, "I have also brought you in here give you a job if you want it."

"Yes. Please can I have it? It has been a dream for me to work here at Bondi."

"Yes, you can have the job. Do you want to try on your uniform now or just get it and try it on when you get home?"

"Can I try it on now as I want to see how it fits?"

"Yeah, that's fine. The female changing rooms are down the corridor to the right. Also, before you go don't tell the boys as I want it to be a surprise to them and you start on Monday." He tells me that, so I get changed into my new uniform which fits perfectly and then I go back down to my post on the beach and try to keep all of my excitement inside of me so that people won't ask what's wrong and so the boys don't get suspicious.

--- Monday morning ---

--- Singlet's POV ---

It's been a few days now and I think that Zoe is keeping something from us but mainly me as we talk most of the time. I don't what she is hiding but after she came out of Hoppo's office a few days ago she has been bursting with excitement. I know that it is her secret that she will tell eventually but I just want to know.

I have just walked into the tower at around 5.30 am, and it is quiet for some weird reason as I didn't see anyone else even if it is normal because when I am on the opening shift, I usually am here before everyone else, so I started to put the shutters up so that the people in the tower can look out and then I go on open the garage to get all of the stuff out. When I get down there, I look at the time to see that ten minutes have passed but none of the boys has turned up yet so I finish setting up hoping that they will be there by the time I am finished.

When I am finished, I see Whippet, Maxi and Chappo are there but I know that someone is missing as we normally have 5 people here in the morning on the opening shift. I turn around and get the binoculars out with all of the radios.

--- 3rd Person ---

Zoe walks into the tower while Singlets is turned around to get the binoculars and the radios. She sees Maxi, Whippet and Chappo standing around so she taps them on the back, and they turn around and all of them went to say something, but she just puts her finger to her lips so that they are quiet, so she then continues to creep up on Singlets and then she jumps on his back to scare him as he was starting to stand up. When she jumps onto his back, she wraps her arms around her neck so that she doesn't fall off his back. When she jumps onto his back, he screams which hurt her ears, but she doesn't let go. When he realises that she jumped onto his back she is put down and hugs her.

--- Zoe's POV ---

When Singlets puts me down, he pulls me into a hug but then pulls away and puts me at arm's length and then says, "What's this?" pointing to the uniform

"Oh. This," I said while pointing to the uniform. "I'm a lifeguard here now. Did Hoppo not tell you?" I said that just to wind him up as I knew that Hoppo didn't tell him.

"No, he didn't tell me," he said.

"Hey Singlets, if it makes you feel any better, he didn't tell us either and we only just found out as well," Maxi said. We talk for a bit longer until we have to separate to do our jobs down on the beach and I found out that I am at North Bondi with Singlets today. So, we went down there and sat there and talked about stuff while we were watching the ocean. At around 10.55 am I had to go out and do my first rescue as a Bondi lifeguard. When I get back, I sit back down and then Singlets asks me a question. "Hey. Um... Zoe. I was wondering... Well, we have known each other for a while now and I just want to know if you would like to be my girlfriend?"

"Yeah of course I will. I like you a lot and I just didn't want to rush into things, and I didn't know if you liked me back, so I didn't ask."

"I like you too. I have for a while." He said that but then I spotted a few people going under when the waves go over the top of them. "Hey, Singlets we have to go. 3 to 5 people are going under and we need to go now." We both get out of the buggy and grab a board and get to them but then we have to call for backup as we both don't have enough room to take them back to the sand.

We get back with the help of Jules, Whippet and Maxi. We then only have to do a few more rescues before we swap posts which turned out that I was in the tower with Kerrbox it turns out that we both get along well so I finish my duty at around 3 pm and then I meet up with the boys at Icebergs at around 8 pm so that we can celebrate my first day on the job.
