As the sorting was finally over I looked around at my batchmates, apart from Tracy and Daphne there were 4 other first years, the one with the blond hair and started, "I am Ryan Selwyn, heir apparent to the Ancient and Noble house of Selwyn, pleased to make acquaintances." He had a smooth voice and munched on a piece of chicken as I replied, "Greetings, Alex Fawley, heir to the Most Ancient and Noble house of Fawley."
His mouth twitched as I added 'Most' to indicate the difference in status and he nodded politely. The only reason he greeted me first was because of this difference. The other 3 on the other hand didn't have the status in the pureblood circles so they didn't initiate a conversation.
"Hello, Alex Fawley, pleased to meet you" I turned to the other three and nodded politely so they also greeted me back.
Delicia Avery was the shortest among us, she had her platinum blond hair braided into a ponytail and only the dull expression on her face ruined her doll-like features. I looked into her red eyes for a second before moving on and turning to the tallest guy among us. Charlie Rowle gave the impression of a tough guy with his straight back and stern look, he meticulously murdered some mashed potatoes on his mission tonight.
The last member of our year was also the most interesting one, named Aries Shafiq, the family has been known to have been extinct but is now a member with its heir ring was present in the Slytherin house. He looked around curiously at everything and the awe in his eyes is ever-present.
'Damn, if grandma hadn't helped me maybe I would have looked around like this.'
I shook my head and finished my dinner, "It was quite good, I wasn't expecting that-" Daphne said beside me and I nodded, "Yes, maybe it was specially prepared because of the welcome feast?" She shrugged as the food vanished and Dumbeldore stood from his seat and the hall fell silent, "I have a few start-of-term notices to give you now that everyone's had their fill. First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to everyone, there are numerous dark creatures residing in it and it can be quite dangerous, its name is-- forbidden forest, I believe-" he turned an expectant look towards Prof. McGonagall who just sighed.
He chuckled and continued, "I have also been asked by Mr Filch, our resident caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. What else was there, ah yes! Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch. Like every year you should get your schedules tomorrow morning, and on this happy note let's everyone join together for some tunes."
Dumbledore gave his wand a little flick, and a long golden ribbon flew out of it, which rose high above the tables and twisted itself, snakelike, into words. As everyone started to sing that horrible song in different tunes, I noticed that none of the Slytherin's participated. I looked at the most famous wizard of the 20th century, waving his wand like a loon as, 'yeah I will not describe this as a song....'
I shared a look with Daphne as the song finally ended and we were allowed to leave. A male student, who according to his height should at least be a 5th year approached us and said, "First years on me." his tone was stern and all 7 of us stood up and followed him out of the hall.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was lying in my bed looking around at a rather bland room. 'At least we got our own room...' The room was undecorated, with a small bed with green linen bedsheets, a small table with 2 drawers, and a small bookshelf.
'According to the prefects we can do anything with our room. But the curfew is crazy, why do we have to get in our dorm at 8, ugh!'
I plucked off my necklace and placed the trunk on the ground before opening it and slipping into it.
"So how was your first day, hmm Slytherin not bad!" Grandma greeted me as I entered the study. Grandpa on the other hand just sighed.
"Oh shut it!" Grandma glared at him before turning to me with a serious look, "So you got the induction?"
My mind flashed back to the speech we received as soon as we entered the common room...
----------FlashBack---------------
"Congratulations on having made it into the greatest house in Hogwarts-" A tall teacher who was covered from neck to toe in pitch black robes said, "I am Professor Severus Snape, I'll be teaching you the delicate art of potion-making, and I am your head of the house, so if you have any problems come to me." He scanned all of us then nodded, "To those who have not read their textbooks yet I would advise reading at least the first chapter going into the class, we Slytherin are discriminated in Hogwarts and need to stick together so I don't want anyone to embarrass anyone outside of our house, Do you understand!" His tone was soft and easy flowing but each sentence was spoken with such intent that everyone immediately nodded their head.
"Good, your prefects will take it from here-" he said and then practically glided out of the room.
A student stepped forward and said, "Well, I guess you are in our care now, my name is Blake Yaxley, and I want to make one thing very clear," he looked at all of us before saying, "Your family name might get you immunity and respect in the outside world but here in Slytherin if you go against the rules no one will be able to help you."
"So let's start with rule no 1- No fighting between each other outside the common rooms"
"Rule no 2- If another Slytherin is in trouble and you can provide an alibi or help him, don't step back"
"Rule no 3-"
--------------Flashback End---------------
"Yeah, let's be honest and say, there are rules-" I said to Grandma who nodded.
"Well Slytherin has always had its Hierarchy in the house, the one who told you the rules today should be the current leader of Slytherin. To tell you the truth I never thought you would end up in Slytherin with your personality, so I never discussed anything like this with you."
She paused for a second then said, "Follow the rules until you are strong enough to ignore them, they won't do anything to you, although they may sound strict but in reality, none of the lower years actually challenge their authority so they will just ignore you if you don't do anything."
I nodded so she continued, "But thriving in Slytherin isn't as easy, first of all, go pick out the red book on the third shelf in the charms section." As I picked out the mentioned book she continued, "well you need to learn the first charm as soon as possible, it's a charm that you apply to your hair so that none of your hair can be summoned off. Also, take special care if you get injured and vanish any blood left behind, the second charm will help you with that."
I gave her a wide-eyed look so she paused, "I guess we need to teach you some basic knowledge about Rituals and blood magic too." She sighed and rubbed her head so I asked her a question that's been bugging me since evening, "Grandma, where is the Chamber of Secrets?"
