The town's people looked towards them curiously as well, but they did not rush to crowd around them as they had outside the walls. They all seemed to be busy.

Indeed, rather than a crowd gathering around them, there was a cluster of people gathered elsewhere, nearly fifty of them. They all stood by the edge of one of the town waterways, held back a few metres by two chevalar.

Pash thought that to be more than curious.

"We're free from that, but we'd better wait around here a while," Sol said, "at least until the Captain comes to dismiss us. Don't reckon he'd be too happy to be chasing us all the way back to our quarters."

"Fair enough," Harkin agreed. "At least we've got a couple of seats for us."

By seats, he meant the low stone wall surrounding the bakery and its thatched longhouse, with its open windows filling the air with the scent of freshly baked bread and sweets.
