In the dream version of the bedroom, I reached out to take Doll's hand. Or perhaps, I should again not skip over so much of the past.
"I don't trust you." she said. "Where are you going?"
"I need to have a chat with Sobek, or whichever of his representatives will meet me tonight."
"Have him meet you here. I don't trust you."
"No, that's just silly. Me coming to him helps show everyone that I serve him, and not the other way around."
"Do you? Serve him?"
I shrugged. "I have to go."
"I don't like it. You turn your back to leave, and I'll kill you."
I extended my hand. "Then come with me. See for yourself. But one way or another, I need to report tonight."
She squinted at me, something she could do in the dream realm. "That moon maiden is hunting you."
"She's expended quite a bit of energy. I think I have a month or so before I need to worry about her again."
I had meant this chapter to have double meaning, rising into the heavens and the decision to climb upward. And, eventually, I arrived on the truth; I was wasting time trying to fit both concepts into 1600 words or less.
And, life doesn't care about what I decide, it's going to keep hitting me with life issues whenever it feels like it. Most of these are, as the chapter reminds me, the result of my own choices, actions, and inactions.
I forget who said it, but chosing to do nothing is still a choice.
In any event, thank you for your continued readership. It means more to me than I can put into words, which won't stop me from trying.
