Chapter 82: Alone, But Not Lonely

On a bright Sunday morning, Cathy returned to her new home. It was situated on top of a hill, with a tree on its right side, the rays of the sun making it look more magical. She was walking with books in both her hands, a delightful smile on her face. She had been accepted as an assistant for kindergarten. It seemed impossible, but the head mistress allowed her to work four hours daily to assist teachers in taking care of the kids. She studied French, while she spent most of the hours helping the kids in going to the bathroom, assisting with their lunches and carrying their bags to class.

“Are you ready?” Keith asked as he got in the huge hotel room. It is ten minutes to nine in the evening, and Jon is already in his white suit, waiting for everything to be prepared to begin the ceremony. “I sure am,” he replied to his father with a forceful smile. Keith faced him, and placed his left hand on his right shoulder. “Thank you, son.” He gave him a warm hug and went outside afterwards. An usher knocked on the door. “Come in,” Jon responded. “You needed help, sir” “I need to know what time it is now in Switzerland.” The usher put out his mobile phone from his pocket, typed in a few things and replied, “It is currently eight fifty-five in the morning, sir.” “That’s all, thank you.”

Cathy reached the end of the road to her home. There were several homes in the village. The houses looked like kids standing in line, with the little ones in front and the taller ones in the back. The roads were a bit like zigzags, each one leading to someone’s home. She reached the doorstep, the roof was rusty orange, as well as the window frames. The walls were in shades of brown with hanging planter boxes under each window. From the outside, there were five windows. On each side of the front door, and three upstairs. One on top of another, and one on top of the door. She opened the rustic wooden door, and made her way in. “Aah, feels like home!” she exclaimed. She placed the books on the shelf behind the wooden cabinet which is a worn out kind of green. She rushed to the kitchen and prepared tea. As soon as she was finished, she opened a window and placed the tea mug on the round table. She sat on a chair overlooking the mountains and the road she went by. She was enjoying the tranquillity when the telephone rang. “Hello,”she greeted. It was a woman on the other line. A matured woman’s voice from the other line said, “I just called in to tell you, tonight is the night. I am watching the news.” Puzzled, Cathy frowned and asked, “What’s there?” “The wedding, Jon is marrying the supermodel, Stephanie Fox. You should watch the news.” “American news, not to my liking.” She put the phone down, and stared at the magnificent view outside. “This is where I belong. The US used to be my home, but it no longer is. I am so much better here. Alone, but at least not lonely.,” she whispered to herself and sipped on the cup of tea.
